Viet Nam: Typhoon and Floods

This report on the typhoon and subsequent floods in Viet Nam is based on
information from the OCHA Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific
(ROAP), UN Agencies and the International Federation for the Red Cross
(IFRC).
SITUATION
1. On the night of 3 October 2007, Typhoon Lekima hit Viet Nam, followed
by heavy rains that caused severe floods. Five provinces were affected
by the Typhoon and 27 provinces were affected by heavy flooding. The
worst affected provinces were Thanh Hoa, Nghe An and Ha Tinh.
2. The Typhoon Lekima and subsequent floods caused 53 deaths and 13
people remain missing, according to initial reports from the Government
of Viet Nam. Reports indicate that more than 52,000 houses were
submerged or were damaged, while almost 6,000 houses were destroyed. The
impact of the Typhoon and floods on the infrastructure, food security
and agriculture is being assessed.

NATIONAL RESPONSE
3. The Government of Viet Nam and local authorities are providing the
initial response. On 9 October, a joint assessment mission was
dispatched to the worst affected provinces: Thanh Hoa, Nghe An and Ha
Tinh. National authorities, the Viet Nam Red Cross, international NGOs,
UNICEF and WHO are participating in the joint assessment mission. The
mission report is expected on 15 October.
INTERNATIONAL RESPONSE
4. The Government of Viet Nam has not requested international assistance
to date. OCHA Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (ROAP) is in
contact with the Office of the United Nations Resident Coordinator in
Hanoi, Viet Nam, and will continue to closely monitor the situation.
