OCHA Situation Report Ghana: Floods Report for 11 October - 1 November 2007 12 November 2007

Highlights - As of 1 November Ghana flash appeal on floods has been funded at 25%. - There are concerns regarding transporting relief items to flood affected communities - An outbreak of meningitis is feared after flooding Situation Overview Flooding in the Upper East Region, Upper West Region, Northern Region and parts of the Western Region have affected 332,600 people and caused the death of 56 according to the Government. Some 35,000 houses, 1,500 kilometres of road and thousand hectares of crops have been destroyed. On 9 October an appeal for international assistance was launched by the government for the reconstruction of flood devastated areas. Humanitarian Response Food and non food items WFP has reported that all food for the Immediate Response Account (IRA) has been dispatched to the districts and redistributed to communities. A total of 821mt of mixed commodities have been dispatched to 20districts for 75,000 beneficiaries in the three northern regions. A five month emergency operation will begin on 1st December, it is intended to provide 75,000 beneficiaries with cereals, vitamin A enriched oil and iodized salt. In addition, it will provide 10,000 pregnant/nursing women and malnourished children under 5years with corn Soya blend, vitamin A enriched vegetable oil and sugar. NGO Care International has distributed 96,325kgs of food to 14,687 beneficiaries in 20 communities in the districts of Builsa, Bawku Municipal and Garu Tampane in Upper east Region and East Mamprusi in Northern Region. It further reported that 1750kg of the distributed food were from NGO Concern Universal. In preparation for the distribution, CARE trained 30 persons, including four from CARE, eight from the National Disaster Management Office (NADMO), and 18 from local NGO partners on food distribution methodologies, including Sphere and the Good Enough Guide norms.
