OCHA Situation Report No. 4
Madagascar: Cyclones
28 March 2008

UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs
CONTEXT
1. The multi-sectoral rapid assessments in the wake of the cyclones Fame
(27 January), Ivan (17 February), and Jokwe (5 March) have been completed.
Emergency response is currently underway in all of the impacted areas.
Cyclonic activity in the Indian Ocean remains high, with the fourteenth
system named Lola affecting Mauritius on 27 March. The cyclone season is
expected to abate during the course of April. Until then, all humanitarian
actors will remain on stand-by for possible emergency interventions.
SITUATION OVERVIEW
2. Impact of cyclone Ivan: 332,391 people affected throughout the country,
including 93 deaths and 191,182 people without shelter.
3. A majority of the people without shelter have either recovered their
homes, or returned to their respective families.
4. More than one month after the passing of cyclone Ivan, distribution of
relief items is taking place in the impacted areas, mainly in the east of
the country.
5. A recent assessment in the south-east of the country showed a growing
risk of food insecurity. The population resorted to eating the last
available food reserves. The food insecurity is exacerbated by the
inaccessibility of the region. A response is currently being organised for
the south-east.
6. Food and other donations continue to be given to BNGRC. Financial
donations received until today by BNGRC amount to MGA 306,982,853.
