PERU-EARTHQUAKE
DHA INFORMATION REPORT NO.1
13 NOVEMBER 1996
1. The U.S. Geological Survey reports that an earthquake with
a magnitude of 7.3 on the Richter scale occurred on 12
November 1996 near the cost of Peru about 65 miles (100
km) south-southeast of Lima at 17:00 GMT (12:00 pm local
time in Peru ).
2. According to the Office of the DHA /UNDP
Resident Representative in Lima, the intensity of
the earthquake, following the Modified Mercalli
Intensity Scale, is as follows:
VII in San Juan de Marcona, Ica
VI in Palpa and Nazca
V to VI in Ica
IV in Camana, Arequipa
III in Tacna and Lima
II in Huancayo and Pucallpa
The Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale ( from I to
XII ) describes the effects of an earthquake at a
particular place.
3. Following reports from the Civil Defense
Institute of Peru (INDECI) preliminary figures
indicate four people dead and some 150 people
injured. National authorities are carrying out
assessment missions in the affected areas.
4. Casualties are likely to rise.
5. So far the Government has not issued a request
for international assistance.
