     Effects on population
                                                                    
       1. The UNDP/DHA Resident Representative in Lima reports      
       that,                                                        
       according to initial estimates, 9,000 families have been     
       affected, 15 people have been reported dead and 320          
       injured.                                                     
                                                                    
       Damage on housing/ infrastructure                            
                                                                    
       2. It is currently estimated that some 7,000 houses have     
       been                                                         
       destroyed, of which 3,800 in the Province of Nazca           
       (majority of                                                 
       housing is built with adobe). Water and electricity          
       supplies have                                                
       been cut and phone lines are down. The main highway linking  
        Nazca                                                       
       to the cities of Palpa, Ica and Lima has been blocked by a   
       fallen                                                       
       bridge and a collapsed tunnel.                               
                                                                    
       National response                                            
                                                                    
       3. Civil Defense Department in Lima is providing food,       
       medical                                                      
       supplies and tents.                                          
                                                                    
       4. No information on damage is available concerning the      
       rural                                                        
       areas. Assessment missions by the national authorities       
       still                                                        
       underway using in particular aerial means.                   
                                                                    
       5. Local communities have established teams for the          
       cleaning up                                                  
       activities and the recovering of household goods.
