                 VIETNAM - TYPHOONS AND TROPICAL DEPRESSIONS
                      DHA-GENEVA SITUATION REPORT NO.8
                              20 NOVEMBER 1996


       1. The Government called a meeting of international donors on
       19 November and provided summary information on damages caused
       since the beginning of the 1996 flood and storm season (July).

       2. To date, in 40 out of Vietnam's 52 provinces, 965 people
       have been killed and USD 628 million worth of damages have been
       caused. Approximately 55,000 houses have collapsed and more
       than 180,000 hectares of rice field have been lost. More
       details on damages to people, housing, agriculture, water
       resources and various infrastructures are available from DHA
       upon request.

       3. The Government indicated that assistance both from foreign
       Governments and NGOs would be welcomed, although it would not
       like to make an international appeal for assistance.

       4. So far, the following contributions have been reported to

       5. IFRC reported that, in response to its first appeal for the
       northern part of Vietnam in August, USD 652,000 (CHF 782,000)
       were received from many donor Governments and national Red
       Cross and Crescent Societies and that, in response to its
       second appeal for the Mekong delta in October, USD 922,000 (CHF
       1,107,000) have been received so far.

       6. DHA is prepared to serve as a channel for cash contributions
       to be used during the immediate relief phase. Funds are spent
       in coordination with relevant organizations of the UN system,
       and DHA provides donor Governments with written confirmation on
       utilization of funds contributed.

       7. Funds should be transferred to DHA account no. CO.590.160.1

       8. For coordination purposes, donors are requested to inform
       DHA Geneva, as indicated below, of bilateral relief missions/
