DHA SITUATION REPORT NO.5

Effects on population/Needs
1. The UNDP/DHA Resident Representative and WHO report
that the authorities now consider that more than 62,000
people have been affected. The death toll stands at 14 and
the number of injured is 560 people. Approx. 4,000 houses
are totally destroyed, and 10,500 houses are damaged. 18
health institutions and 81 schools are damaged.
2. The situation of the homeless remains difficult, and
many of the affected people live in makeshift accomodations
and are fed by communal kitchens. There is a critical need
for temporary shelter and construction materials, as well
as mattresses, blankets, jerrycans and household utensils.
3. Water tankers have been allocated from Lima to
assist in securing water distribution to the affected
areas. Damage to clean water pipes and sewage systems is
still unknown.
4. The health situation seems under control, although
there is an increase in numbers of diarrhoea, upper
respiratory diseases and eye infections.
5. All the schools in the affected areas have been
closed, as over half of the schools are damaged.
National response
6. The Civil Defense (INDECI) has established an
Operations Center in Nazca, UNDP has contracted a
consultant to assist in disaster management, and has
conducted an assessment of the affected areas.
7. Most roads have now been repaired. The construction of
1,000 temporary shelters has started.
8. The Peru Red Cross and the International Federation of
Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) have launched
an Emergency Appeal seeking CHF 913,000 (approximately USD
730,400) in cash, kind and services.

11. DHA is prepared to serve as a channel for cash
contributions to be used during immediate relief phase.
Funds are spent in coordination with relevant
organizations of UN System, and DHA provides doner
Governments with written confirmation on utilization of
funds contributed.
