Kyrgyzstan Earthquake
DHA Situation Report No. 2
16 January 1997
1. Further to the earthquake which hit the Naryn region of
the Kyrgyz Republic on 9 January 1997, a UN Disaster Management
Team, composed of the UNICEF and World Bank Representatives,
visited the area of Kosh-Dyube and Dzhergetal with national
relief officials. They reported the following information on
the damage and relief needs:
- The housing sector had proven to be the most
affected with more than 400 houses damaged. Power supply
and telephone lines had been demolished for several
kilometers. Preliminary assessment estimated material
damage in excess of USD 2 million.
- In spite of the assistance being provided by the
Kyrgyz Government, which mobilized all its efforts to
help the victims of this disaster, the conditions of the
local population were aggravated by lack of fuel and
electricity. At the time of the assessment, children had
resumed schooling in tents with no heating.
2. While no request for international assistance has
been received so far from the Government, the President
of the Republic has indicated that the people of
Kyrgyzstan would very much appreciate all effort by the
UN to mobilize international support for the
reconstruction of the local school and hospital.
3. Further details on the consequences of this
earthquake will be disseminated by the DHA's RCB Regional
Desk for Europe and NIS after receiving the Government's
official report.
4. DHA is prepared to serve as a channel for cash
contributions to be used during immediate relief phase.
Funds are spent in coordination with relevant
organizations of UN System, and DHA provides donor
Governments with written confirmation on the utilization
of funds contributed.
5. Funds should be transferred to DHA Account No. CO-
590.160.1 at Swiss Bank Corporation, Case Postale 2770,
CH-1211 Geneva 2, with reference: Kyrgyzstan -

inform DHA-Geneva, as indicated below, of bilateral
relief missions/pledges/contributions and their
corresponding value by item.
