         MUDSLIDES RENDER HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE HOMELESS IN THE ANDEAN
                                  REGION



         General Situation

         1.   According to the UNDP/DHA Resident Representative in
         Lima, Peru, mudslides, caused by heavy rains, hit the
         Tamburgo District, Department of Apurimac in the southern
         part of the country. 40 houses have been destroyed and
         hundreds of people were rendered homeless in two
         villages. Many bodies have been recovered, and the death
         toll is likely to rise as the rescue works continue.
         Several hundreds are feared to be buried under the mud.


         National response

         2.   National and local civil defense structures are
         coordinating the rescue and relief activities. A relief
         flight from Lima was supposed to arrive today, 20
         February, in the disaster region  with supplies for the
         affected population.

         3.   To date the Government of Peru has not issued a
         request for international assistance, but welcomes
         assistance, in particular tents, blankets and roof tiles
         for provisional housing.


         Contributions reported to DHA

         4.   The Government of Japan has announced an in-kind
         contribution of 75 tents and 1,700 blankets, in the value
         of JPY 15 million (including transportation),
         approximately US $123,000.

         5.   For coordination purposes, donors are requested to
         inform DHA Geneva of bilateral relief missions/ pledges/
         contributions and their corresponding values by item.
