PERUVIAN GOVERNMENT APPEALS FOR INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE
General situation
1. The UNDP/DHA Resident Representative in Lima, reports that the Andean
region, after being hit by mudslides (as reported in the DHA Situation Report
No.1 of 20 February 1997) is now suffering from flooding.
2. The Vilcanota River has inundated the localities of San Pedro, San Pablo,
Marangani and Sicuani, affecting some 500 families (approximately 1,800
people.) Some 432 houses have either collapsed or been inundated. Crops,
cattle and household goods have also been lost.
3. Since 15 February 1997, several rivers in the region of San Martin, in
the northern part of Peru, have overflowed and caused flooding. 788 houses
have been damaged and about 90 per cent of 12,000 Hectares of maize and rice
have been lost. Approximately 1,500 families have been affected. Three people
have been killed.
National response/Immediate needs
4. The Government of Peru, through the National Institute of Civil Defense,
has appealed for international assistance to the victims of the mudslides in
the Apurimac Department and for those affected by the floods. The immediate
needs are as follows:
- Blankets and clothing;
- Shelter;
- Road and communications rehabilitation;
- Food
- Needs in medicaments are being checked with the
Pan American Health Organization (PAHO/WHO).
5. DHA is prepared to serve as a channel for cash contributions to be used
during the immediate relief phase. Funds are spent in coordination with
relevant organizations of the UN system, and DHA provides donor Governments
with written confirmation on utilization of the funds contributed.
6. Donors wishing to channel their contributions through DHA may transfer

7. For coordination purposes, donors are requested to inform DHA Geneva, as
