APPROXIMATELY 30,000 PEOPLE AFFECTED BY CONTINUOUS FLOODING


General situation

1.  According to the UNDP/DHA Resident Representative in Lima, latest
figures indicate approximately 30,000 people affected by the floods that
have been affecting Peru's southern and northeastern regions. 

2.  The National Civil Defense Institute (INDECI) reports that the most
affected Departments are: 

- Cuzco (Canchis and La Convencion Provinces)- The Vilcanota and the
Chinchimayo rivers have overflowed their banks, affecting some 3,670
people, damaging partially or totally 611 houses as well as irrigation
works; 

- San Martin ( Rioja, Moyobamba and Lamas Provinces)- The Mayo and
Tonchima rivers have also overflowed their banks, killing three people and
leaving homeless approximately 8,700 people, of which 1,500 are isolated
by the floods waters. 1,450 houses have been totally or partially damaged,
7,000 hectares of cultivated land have been devastated; 

- Madre de Dios- Flood waters from the Tambopata and Carbon rivers have
seized several communities, affecting some 3,630 people and damaging
houses and cultivated land; 

- Amazonas- Since February 23, the Mara-on river has flooded more than 300
hectares of agricultural land; 

- Arequipa- Heavy rains in Arequipa City and in several districts left a
toll of 5 people dead, 9 missing and about 4,000 people affected; 

- Puno (Puno Province, and Taraco and Pusi Districts)- The flood waters
from the Coata river affected 1,680 people, damaging partially or totally
280 houses, 315 hectares of cultivated land, irrigation works and causing
the collapse of a district bridge. In the Taraco and Pusi Districts, the
flood waters from the Ramis river affected 4,000 people. 


National response/Immediate needs

3.  Assessment missions still underway, in particular in the
provinces/localities of San Martin Department, through which crosses the
Huallaga River. The Civil defense authorities have begun to distribute
basic food stuff in some areas. 

4.  Further to the list of immediate needs mentioned in DHA Situation
Report No.2, of 28 February 1997, and following the latest assessment
missions, other immediate needs have been identified: 

     - 50 motorpumps;
     - 100 overboard motors;
     - 200,000 corrugated zinc plates;
     - 60,000 blankets;
     - 1,000 industrial type stoves;
     - 1,000 kitchen sets;
     - 25,000 mattresses;
     - 10,000 tools (picks and shovels);
     - 200 plastic rolls for provisional housing;
     - 200 generators (5 and 10 kw);
     - 50 radio-communication sets.


International response

5.  DHA is making available an emergency grant of US $20,000, for the
procurement of relief supplies. 

6.  The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies
has launched an appeal seeking CHF 1, 845,000 (approx.US $1,246,000)in
cash, kind and services to assist 20,000 people for two months. The
Peruvian Red Cross has been participating in rescue and first aid efforts
in cooperation with the Peruvian authorities. 

7.  The Chilean Red Cross has sent 120 blankets and 1, 200 items of
clothing which were distributed in the Province of Abancay. 

8.  DHA is prepared to serve as a channel for cash contributions to be
used during the immediate relief phase. Funds are spent in coordination
with relevant organizations of the UN system, and DHA provides donor
Governments with written confirmation on utilization of the funds
contributed. 

9.  Donors wishing to channel their contributions through DHA may transfer
the funds to DHA account no. CO. 590.160.1 at Swiss Bank Corporation, Case

10.  For coordination purposes, donors are requested to inform DHA Geneva,
as indicated below, of bilateral relief missions/ pledges/ contributions
and their corresponding values by item.
