DHA-GENEVA SITUATION REPORT NO. 7

REQUIREMENTS: REHABILITATION/RECONSTRUCTION

1. In the areas affected by the earthquake of 12 November 1996, there is an
urgent need for removal of debris. An assessment of needs and cost to rent
equipment (payloaders, trucks, levelers) has been done: USD 790,000, of which
USD 93,000 is available to the authorities concerned (this overall budget
covers also need for removal of debris in areas affected by floods, see DHA
situation report number 4 of 11 March 1997 on Peru - Mudslides/Floods).
2. Furthermore, the authorities are addressing themselves to the
repair/reconstruction of schools damaged/destroyed by the earthquake. Funds
are needed to meet these requirements.
3. Donors interested in providing assistance in these areas of rehabilitation
and reconstruction may contact DHA for further details or the UNDP/DHA

4. DHA is prepared to serve as a channel for cash contributions to be used
during immediate relief phase. Funds are spent in coordination with relevant
organizations of UN System, and DHA provides donor Governments with written
confirmation on utilization of funds contributed.
5. Donors wishing to channel their contributions through DHA may transfer the
funds to DHA account no. CO.590.160. 1 at Swiss Bank Corporation, Case

6. For coordination purposes, donors are requested to inform DHA-Geneva, as
indicated below, of relief missions/pledges/contributions and their
