            DHA-GENEVA SITUATION REPORT NO. 2
                      21 MARCH 1997



          APPROXIMATELY 190,000 PEOPLE AFFECTED

1.  The UNDP/DHA Resident Representative in La Paz indicates that,
according to latest reports from the Bolivian Civil Defense, the entire
country has been affected by the floods which have caused extensive damage
to people and property. In the Department of Chuquisaca, the last one to
be hit by the flood waters, 3,228 families have been affected
(approximately 16,000 people) and 56 houses destroyed. 

2.  Latest figures indicate that 38, 976 families have been affected
(approximately 190,000 people) and 3,371 houses destroyed. 

3.  Immediate emergency needs concentrate on food, medicaments, water
supply, water purification tablets and tools (as stated in DHA Situation
Report No.1 of 24 February 1997). 

4.  According to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red
Crescent Societies (IFRC), an Inter-Agency Response Committee, chaired by
the Civil Defense, has been set up. It comprises state agencies, the
Bolivian Red Cross, the Swiss Red Cross, CARITAS, World Vision, USAID and
Assistance to Indigenous People (AIP).The Bolivian Red Cross is
responsible for food distribution, while the other agencies cover other
relief needs and services. 

5.  Contributions reported since DHA Situation Report No.1 of 24 February
1997

6.  The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies
has also launched an appeal seeking CHF 2,450,000 (approximately US$
1,655, 400), in cash, kind and services to assist 108,000 beneficiaries
for two months. 

7.  DHA is prepared to serve as a channel for cash contributions, to be
used during the immediate relief phase, in coordination/consultation with
relevant organizations of the United Nations system. DHA provides donors
with written confirmation and pertinent details concerning the utilization
of the funds contributed. 

8.  Donors wishing to channel their contributions through DHA should
transfer funds to DHA account no. CO.590.160.1 at the Swiss Bank
Corporation, Case Postale 2770, CH-1211Geneva 2, Switzerland, with
reference: Bolivia- Floods. 

9.  For coordination purposes, donors are requested to inform DHA Geneva,
as indicated below, of relief missions/ pledges/contributions and their
