Indonesia - Earthquake - Update
Central Java and Yogyakarta Provinces

This report is developed by HC/RC Office in Indonesia based on
information provided by the National Coordinating Board for the
Management of Disaster (BAKORNAS PB), Provincial Coordinating Unit for
the Management of Disaster of Central Java, Ministry of Social Affairs,
Ministry of Health, UN agencies, NGOs, Donors and media reports.
I. SITUATION
1. Death toll estimates range from 4,992 to 6,234. Injury estimates
range from 33,699 to 57,790. The number of people displaced ranges from
200,000 to 650,000.
2. The local media reports that after meeting with the Governor of
Yogyakarta, the Minister of Foreign Affairs reiterated that the
government is no longer accepting foreign medical volunteer teams. The
life-saving and search and rescue phase are over, but medical treatment
of surviving victims continues. The Minister of National Development
Planning/Chairperson of the National Planning Agency said that the
government will channel funds for housing reconstruction by group. Each
group should consist of up to 30 families, and will receive IDR 900
million (USD 97,000). Each family will get IDR 30 million (USD 3,239).
The funds will be channelled to the bank account of each group. The
community will monitor and manage its own funds. Only local contractors
will be used for housing reconstruction. Data collection should be
finished by June 10 and reconstruction will start on 1 July.
II. NATIONAL RESPONSE
3. MENKOKESRA has issued guidelines on the emergency response for the
earthquake in Yogyakarta and Central Java:
- The next of kin of victims who perished in the quake will receive IDR
2 million (USD 216). The compensation will be distributed through the
head of village/area. The list of the recipients will be prepared by the
head of village/area.
- Food assistance will be provided in the form of 10 kg of
rice/month/person, and IDR 3,000 (USD 0.3) of emergency relief per
person/day.
- IDR 100,000 (USD 11)/family will be provided for victims to buy
kitchen utensils.
- Free medical treatment in state-owned and private hospitals.
- Temporary shelters in temporary camps/IDP areas will be established.
- The Central Government will provide assistance for rehabilitation and
reconstruction of affected communities. Details of implementation will
be worked out once data compilation by the Department of Public Works is
completed.
III. INTERNATIONAL RESPONSE
4. At the request of BAKORNAS, IOM will provide 100 trucks for the
distribution of rice to affected communities in Bantul and Klaten. IOM
continues to provide extensive transport and logistics services to the
Government of Indonesia and various donor shipments arriving at the
airport. 209 tons of food and non-food items have been delivered to
date. The IOM fleet currently consists of 58 trucks. As of 3 June, IOM
has returned 727 patients and accompanying family members from hospitals
in Yogjakarta, Bantul and Klaten to their home villages. The District
Health Office in Yogyakarta has asked IOM to extend both these services
to cover all government hospitals.
5. International Relief Development (IRD) has received and begun
distribution of $45,820 worth of medical supplies and medicines from
Direct Relief International to hospitals and provincial health centers
throughout Bantul. In addition, noodles have been distributed to 36,220
people in the sub-districts of Bayat and Cawas in Klaten. IRD will
continue to distribute noodles to survivors in sub-districts throughout
Klaten and Bantul.
6. The Tunisian Government has sent a cargo plane of food, medicine,
tents, and clothes for earthquake victims.
