INITIAL EMERGENCY APPEAL UPDATE: INDONESIA EARTHQUAKE

SITUATION: Relief and recovery efforts continue in the wake of the May
27 earthquake that killed more than 5,800 persons on the Indonesian
island of Java.
RESPONSE: Church World Service issued an appeal for its work in
Indonesia on May 30. The preliminary appeal outlined work Church World
Service plans during the initial response of up to six months, focusing
on relief and immediate rehabilitation needs. Church World Service is
working as a member of a team of Action by Churches Together (ACT)
International implementing partners that also includes YAKKUM (Yayasan
Kristen untuk Kesehatan Umum - Christian Foundation for Public Health)
Emergency Unit (YEU) and Yayasan Tanggul Bencana di Indonesia ( YTBI).
The CWS response includes food and non-food items, shelter, potable
water, sanitation, health and medical services, psycho-social
assistance, disaster preparedness and advocacy.
Since that appeal was issued, the following work has been completed.
++ On June 11, CWS Indonesia distributed food packages in Sindet hamlet,
Wukirsari village, Imogiri sub-district, Bantul to 322 households. The
packages contained canned fish, vegetable oil, sugar and beans. Some
packages contained biscuits for infants.
++ On June 9, CWS Indonesia distributed hygiene kits and baby kits in
two sub-districts in Klaten district. Five hamlets in Gantiwarno
sub-district, Ceporan village, received 950 hygiene kits and 50 baby
kits, while seven villages in Karangnongkp received 1,065 hygiene kits
and 160 baby kits.
++ Between May 27 and June 8, CWS Indonesia had distributed aid for
20,065 households of quake survivors in Bantul, Sleman, Boyolali, Klaten
and Yogyakarta as follows:
Mineral water: 650 cartons
Biscuits: 218 packs
Instant Noodle: 25 cartons
Blankets: 7,305 sheets
Hygiene kits: 11,354 packs
Baby Kits: 444 packs
Family tents: 218 units
Jerry cans: 950 units
In addition, the CWS psychosocial team has conducted psychological first
aid in Jokotirto village in the Brebah sub-district and Wukirsari
village in the Imogiri sub-district. Further assessments have been
conducted at both villages for a more intensive psychosocial assistance.
As well: Initial activities of the CWS Indonesia water and sanitation
program have begun in Sindet hamlet (Trimulyo village, Jetis
sub-district) dan Nogosari II hamlet (Wukirsari village, Imogiri
sub-district). CWS has started its focus group discussion with the
community for an agreed plan of semi-permanent latrine construction. A
total of 1130 semi-permanent latrines will be constructed in the two
hamlets.
