Indonesia - Earthquake

This report is based on information received from the UN Resident/Humanitarian
Coordinator's Office in Jakarta, Indonesia, and OCHA staff members fielded in
Yogyakarta.
SITUATION
1. The earthquake-affected provinces are Yogyakarta and Central Java. In
Yogyakarta, the earthquake affected all four districts (Sleman, Bantul, Gunung
Kidul and Kulon Progo). In Central Java, it affected districts of Magelang,
Boyolali, Klaten, and Purworejo. People in the affected areas are living in
temporary shelters established nearby their houses, as they are worried about
the aftershocks.
2. A total of 25,000 houses are reported to have been damaged, 4,000 of which
are completely destroyed. UNICEF reported that in Bantul alone there were 2,938
houses were destroyed. A total of 1,224 buildings in Klaten, 355 buildings in
Magelang, 200 buildings in Yogyakarta, 187 buildings in Purworejo and two
buildings in Kebumen were damaged.
3. The latest data obtained from the provincial government authorities
(SATKORLAK PB) Central Java, Sleman, and local government offices are a total
3,220 persons dead and 7,446 persons injured with the following details:

ASSISTANCE REQUESTED
1. OCHA mission from the affected area reported that the doctors/nurses and
medical supplies are urgently needed. IFRC/ the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) also
indicated that the needs of the affected population are field hospitals,
medicine, body bags, food parcels, family tents, family kits, tracing services,
and tarpaulin for temporary shelters.
NATIONAL RESPONSE
2. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is coordinating the emergency response
for the next four days out of his temporary office in Yogyakarta. The Secretary
to Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare says the Government has prepared
a total of IDR 300 billion for earthquake disaster response out of the 2006
emergency budget. On 28 May evening, the Presidential spokesperson stressed the
urgent need for additional field hospitals and medical staff to deal with the
wounded.
3. The Secretariat of the National Coordinating Board for the Management of
Disaster (BAKORNAS PB) conducted a meeting in the morning of 28 May to
coordinate emergency response and will be followed by a ministerial meeting on
the same day. Indonesian Armed forces (TNI) has mobilized 1,000 personnel and
will provide heavy equipment, tents, medical equipment and supplies. A joint
command post has been established at the office of Bantul District Governor to
coordinate assistance. For international assistance, the contact person is
Regina Rahadi at 0811-93-9479.
4. IFRC/PMI Yogyakarta has deployed eight doctors, 14 paramedics, four
ambulances and many volunteers. IFRC/PMI despatched medical teams from Bogor,
Muntilan (in cooperation with Singapore Red Cross), and several other branches.
IFRC/PMI has distributed food parcels and water for 500 families, hygiene kits
for 1,000 families, blankets and sleeping mats for 2,500 families in Bantul,
tents and emergency food parcels for some 300 families in Klaten. In Muntilan,
four semi-platoon tents were dispatched with additional 15 platoon tents to
Bantul. IFRC/PMI has established field hospital in Bantul along with five
medical teams. IFRC and PMI have mobilized 1,000 family tents, 15 generators,
and 1,000 body bags. Starting today distribution was made for 10,000
tarpaulins, 5,000 hygiene kits, 4,00 family kits, and food parcels with water
for 20,000 families.
INTERNATIONAL RESPONSES
5. The first UN agencies/NGOs coordination meeting was held in Bantul on 27
May. A joint inter-agency assessment team comprising representatives from UN
agencies and NGOs was deployed on 28 May to conduct needs assessment.
6. UNICEF has deployed 13 staff to provide medical assistance and conduct
assessments on health, water and sanitation, child protection (trauma and
separation) and shelter.
7. OCHA has established an Information Center within the Government Office in
Bantul. OCHA Regional Disaster Response Adviser dispatched from Kobe, Japan met
with SATKORLAK PB Yogyakarta and Secretary of the local government Office in
Bantul. OCHA has an UNDAC team stand-by and is releasing an Emergency Cash
Grant of USD 50,000.
8. USAID has made available an initial contribution of USD100,000 to support
IFRC/PMI relief efforts. Additionally, USAID/OFDA authorized the use of an
additional USD100,000 in emergency funds through the International Medical
Corps (IMC) to support the transport of a 65-person medical team including
surgical and paramedic staff. USAID will continue to support ongoing emergency
medical response activities. As of today, the total US government commitment to
the support of relief activities in response to the earthquake stands at USD
2.5 million.
9. A rescue team from Singapore arrived on 28 May consists of medical teams (25
persons), rescue teams (43 persons), and command team (14 persons). They will
be deployed to Jetis sub-district in Bantul district. Also a rescue team from
Malaysian arrived on 28 May consists of Search and Rescue team (36 persons) and
medical and command team. They will be deployed to Plered sub-district in
Bantul district.
10. Many countries and organizations, including the European Commission
Humanitarian Office ECHO, have announced the allocation of the relief aid, and
details will follow.
11. IFRC launched an emergency appeal of CHF 12 million (approximately USD 9.79
million) to support PMI.
12. The UN HC/RC Office in Jakarta will continue to be in contact with
pertinent government and non-government institutions, as well as with the
Indonesian Red Cross to monitor the situation.
13. OCHA is in close contact with the UN HC/RC Office in Jakarta, the Regional
Office for Asia and the Pacific in Bangkok and will revert with further
information as it becomes available. This situation report, together with
