CHURCH WORLD SERVICE: EMERGENCY RESPONSE PROGRAM
Situation Report: Pakistan Flooding
August 20, 2008
SITUATION: Monsoon flooding this month in the Rajanpur district of the
eastern Pakistan state of Punjab province has affected a large swath of
territory - some 530,000 acres in all - in what is a predominately
agricultural area. About half of the affected area is cultivated land
used for agricultural production - the district's economic lifeblood.
Affected crops include cotton, wheat and sugarcane.
The flooding has damaged or destroyed more than 10,000 homes, according
to Church World Service Pakistan/Afghanistan and has disrupted the lives
of some 375,547 people.
Flooding is adversely affecting access to safe drinking water, while
resulting stagnant water is increasing the risk for malaria and diarrhea
and skin diseases, CWS P/A reports.
RESPONSE: CWS-P/A staff members have conducted assessments of the
affected area in the past two weeks and have concluded that needs
include food packages, shelter, wheat seed, fertilizer, hand pumps and
hygiene kits. A CWS appeal for this emergency is likely.
