OCHA Situation Report No. 6 Nepal: Koshi River Floods in Sunsari and Saptari 28 August 2008

Source: UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs Kathmandu, 28 August 2008 This situation report is based on information received from the OCHA Office in Biratnagar, UN Agencies and humanitarian partner organisations Situation in Sunsari and Saptari Districts, Eastern Nepal 1) Flooding: The Kosi River continues to erode the embankment in broke through on 18 August (see earlier Situation Reports) and has effectively altered it course. The river now flows to a large part through the broken embankment passing several VDCs in Nepal and into Bihar, where it has flooded up to 1,000 villages to the east of its previous course and affected reportedly more than a million people. 2) In Nepal, four VDCs in Sunsari district remain essentially under water: (Shree) Haripur and Shripur(javdi), as well as the Western parts of Laukihi and Paschhim Kushaha remain completely flooded. Other VDCs in the area (Bhokraha, Madhuwan, Narshigha, Bashntapur and Dhuskighat) have experienced some limited flooding and are hosting displaced people. Saptari District has not been flooded as such, but has seen an influx of flood displaced people, in particular to Bhardaha and Hanumannagar.
