OCHA Situation Report South Asia Earthquake Logistics Bottlenecks as of 18 January 2006

Source: UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs Current Issues: Weather Helicopter operations have been grounded on January 15, 16 and 17 due to bad weather conditions. They have started again today (January 18). The majority of main roads into the valleys have been cut off by land, mud and snow slides. Daily road conditions updates are available on www.unjlc.org. (Logistics Cluster Meeting, 16.01.06; UNJLC Islamabad, 18.01.06) Unplanned camps An urgent need for continuous relief assistance remains in the 118 unplanned camps below the snowline that have sprung up in the earthquake-affected areas. (IASC TF, 16.01.06; OCHA, 14.01.06) Atlas Logistique Due to the increased workload in the past days, Atlas Logistique will run out of funds by the end of January. Agencies and NGOs are asked to submit their plans up till mid April in order for Atlas to plan accordingly. (Logistics Cluster Meeting, 16.01.06) Developments: Fuel farm Abbottabad The French military have confirmed that the fuel farm in Abbottabad will continue to operate until the end of March. (Logistics Cluster Meeting, 16.01.06) Helicopter under-slung load operations UNHAS has commenced under-slung load operations from Bagh with four Mi8s. The U.S. military has handed over all sling nets (a total of 350) to UNHAS who will now facilitate all sling load operations, including those of the U.S. Chinooks. (Logistics Cluster Meeting, 16.01.06) Training for humanitarian aid workers The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) has provided Norwegian Alpine Support Teams to train approximately 1000 UN and international and local NGO staff on how to prevent illness or fatal accidents in the mountains.
