ZAMBIA: World Bank to support HIV/AIDS programme
The World Bank has pledged US $42 million to help Zambia's anti-AIDS
campaign, but disbursement of the funds will hinge on the response of an
unpredictable parliament to a proposed new national HIV/AIDS policy.
The Zambian government and the World Bank reached agreement late last
month on a programme under which the Bank would provide the funds to the
Zambia National Response to HIV/AIDS (ZANARA) project. However, this
depends on the passing of legislation that guarantees the provision of
antiretroviral drugs to people who need them.

AFRICA: HIV-related deaths among teachers alarming
Central and Eastern African countries, whose education systems are already
threatened by HIV/AIDS, need to take concrete steps to minimise the impact
of the pandemic, a regional forum in Yaounde, Cameroon, has concluded.
The sub-regional forum on UNESCO's 'Education For All' (EFA) programme,
held on 22-25 April, highlighted the alarming death rate among teachers
who the 100 participants said, constitute high-risk groups in several
countries. The high mortality rate among educators, the forum noted, could
be an obstacle to achieving the objectives of EFA.

SOUTHERN AFRICA: Food aid for HIV/AIDS affected families
The International Red Cross launched an appeal this week for more than
four million dollars to provide support for HIV/AIDS families threatened
by southern Africa's worsening food crisis.
Following an assessment of needs in three of the most drought-affected
countries in southern Africa, the International Federation of Red Cross
and Red Crescent Societies called for funds to assist 450,000 people in
Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe over the next twelve months.
"We expect that the situation will get worse in the coming months. The
nutritional status is already very bad for many people particularly young
children orphaned because of HIV/AIDS and the high numbers of adults who
are infected with the virus," Dr Guy Zimmermann, a Federation nutritional
expert who was part of the Federation's assessment team, said in a press
release.
The Red Cross intervention would mainly target HIV/AIDS affected families
and orphans, providing bulk food distribution and supplementary feeding at
communal kitchens, the release added.
SOUTH AFRICA: Global Fund boost for HIV/AIDS programme
South Africa's HIV/AIDS programme received a boost last week with the
announcement of a US $165.2 million grant from the Global Fund to fight
AIDS, Tuberculosis (TB) and Malaria.
South Africa's grant awards cover two proposals, focusing on treatment,
care, and support of people with TB and HIV. The Fund awarded almost US
$93 million to the country's coordinating mechanism, the South African
National AIDS Council.

LESOTHO: Country battles pandemic
Lesotho has one of the highest HIV/AIDS infection rates in the world, yet
prevention and treatment programmes are only just getting off the ground.
UNAIDS associate country programme advisor Ludo Bok told PlusNews the
impoverished mountain kingdom was still in the early stages of responding
to the pandemic, but had a prevalence rate of between 31 and 34 percent.
