AFRICA: HIV/AIDS and partner violence
Susan Teffo was burnt over a primus stove by her husband when she
disclosed her HIV-positive status. When her four-year-old son tried to
stop his father, he was burnt as well.
Although charges of attempted murder have been laid against against
Susan's husband, she does not intend leaving him. Doing so would deprive
her of the drugs she has access to through her husband's medical aid.
A fear of violence discourages women who receive HIV voluntary counseling
and testing (VCT) from telling partners about their test results, studies
have found.

SOUTH AFRICA: AIDS policy shift?
A rebellion against government policy on the treatment of HIV/AIDS is
taking place in South Africa, with four provinical governments openly
defying national policy and announcing the provision of nevirapine to all
pregnant women in the public sector. Prominent leaders have also called
for a rethink of the government's current AIDS policy.
Former South African President Nelson Mandela's call this week for the
government to provide free drugs to AIDS patients has forced them to
review their AIDS policy, analysts told PlusNews.

Malaria, Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang has announced.
The applications, which have to be submitted by 10 March, will focus on
tuberculosis (TB) treatment and "behaviour change intervention" to prevent
