NEWS
AFRICA: Getting old on ARVs
"Eish, with ARVs [antiretrovirals], you get fat and you get old," a patient at
Johannesburg Hospital recently told her doctor. A few years ago, when people
infected with HIV in the developing world were wasting away and dying in
devastating numbers, her complaint would have been cause for celebration. But
as more and more HIV-positive Africans extend their life expectancy with ARVs,
their waistlines and risks of contracting serious non-AIDS related illnesses,
such as diabetes and heart disease, are expanding accordingly.

SUDAN: People with HIV demand safe drinking water
For years, Lole Laila Lole had to drink, cook with, and bathe in the dirty,
contaminated water he fetched from the River Nile. "There was no other way," he
told IRIN/PlusNews.

KENYA: HIV-positive people feeling the pinch of high food prices
Soaring food prices are beginning to affect the health of HIV-positive people
in Kenya. Health workers say the situation is especially dire in the remote and
chronically food insecure northern parts of the country.

COTE D'IVOIRE: Victims of war still paying the price
Josette* remembers the "black day" on 19 September 2002, when the New Forces
rebels, based in Bouake, Cote D'Ivoire, launched an insurrection against
President Laurent Gbagbo's government, forcing thousands of people to flee the
city.

SOUTH AFRICA: High food prices cripple orphan feeding programmes
Elizabeth Kineelwe, the cook at a drop-in centre that provides meals and
support to orphans and impoverished families in Soweto, Johannesburg's largest
township, is on the frontlines of a nationwide struggle to cope with rising
food prices. Lately, she has been cooking a lot of cabbage soup.

KENYA: People think because I can't see, I can't hear either
Catherine Wanjiku is a visually impaired teacher from Thika District in central
Kenya who was diagnosed with HIV in 2001. She told a recent media briefing on

2. "Sex work, violence and HIV", a guide for programmes with sex workers -
International HIV/AIDS Alliance
The guide discusses the challenges involved in ensuring that violence is
addressed in HIV programmes, gives a detailed understanding of violence in
relation to sex work and challenges some common assumptions. It provides
examples from real programmes that illustrate ways HIV and AIDS projects can
help reduce the incidence of violence against sex workers and provide support
