Assistance to Displaced in Sulawesi: ASID-13
Renewed Violence on Sulawesi, causing more to flee their villages.
Geneva, 23 October 2001
On Sunday, 14 October, unidentified armed men shot at a public bus
carrying about 40 passengers in the Sausu sub-district of Donggala
district in Central Sulawesi, killing at least one woman and seriously
wounding four others, according to Antara news agency.
ACT partner, the Gereja Kristen Sulawesi Tengah (GKST)/ Central Sulawesi
Christian Church reported that since this incident the tension has further
escalated and that Muslim extremists are stopping all the buses to check
ID's and threatening to kill Christians on the spot. Some villages were
again under attack exacerbating an already unstable situation. In the
Poso region more families are fleeing to Tentena and interior villages,
considered to be safe.
According to GKST they are not able to respond to the increasing need due
to the lack of funds. The (still open) Appeal ASID 13 has been, thus far,
poorly funded - US$ 3,500 of a total target of US$ 97,535 (3.5%). Appeal
ASID 13 was launched on 6 August 2001, with date for completion 30
November 2001. An extension of the implementation period will be
considered if necessary.
The project comprised the following components to assist the most
vulnerable:
- Flood relief for new and for targeted earlier displaced and vulnerable
families
- Non food items for newly displaced
We urge you to reconsider your response to this appeal in the light of the
recent deteriorating situation and provide GKST with the means to assist
the increasing number of displaced. ACT will inform you when further
information is received from our partner.
