THE CHURCH WORLD SERVICE: EMERGENCY RESPONSE PROGRAM CWS EMERGENCY APPEAL: Sudan/Internally Displaced Persons # 6459 for $45,000 December 2, 2002

SITUATION: The war in Sudan between government forces and the Sudan People's Liberation Army has killed an estimated 2 million people since 1983, and displaced another 4 million. A recent report by the International Crisis Group (ICG) says that not only are civilians caught in the crossfire between the warring parties, but that more recently, civilians have been placed directly in the line of fire. The country has also suffered severe drought and a combination of the drought and the war has created a state of chronic insecurity, poverty and displacement, particularly among the rural communities in southern Sudan over the years. RESPONSE: CWS is responding to one part of the crisis by supporting the Sudan Council of Churches (SCC), which is assisting the recently displaced people Juba area who fled the fighting over the symbolically important town of Torit. The town was taken over by the guerrillas on Sept. 1, but the government militia and army recaptured and regained control of the town a week later. The fighting for the town caused a massive movement of people from Torit to Juba. The SCC estimates approximately 11,570 people were displaced to Juba and walked a distance of more than 80 miles. The IDPs are reportedly traumatized, emaciated, weak and hungry, requiring clothing and food and medical assistance. Currently they are in a transit camp in the city of Gumbo. The SCC is responding by supplying washing basins, mosquito netting, cooking pots, plates, plastic sheets, emergency food, seeds and tools to 1,100 families - some 5,500 people in all. Most are children and women. Total budget for the SCC response is $413,351; budget includes $103,398 for food, $32,315 for shelter, $16,289 for emergency drugs; $27,561 for seeds and tools; $15,945 for utensils. CWS-ERP is seeking $100,000 from its denominational members for this appeal. For more specific information, including budget information, contact CWS ERP.
