A committee comprised of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MoARD), Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH), Veterinary Laboratory Department, FAO, USAID and WHO established on 27 December is preparing appropriate prevention and response. The committee is led by MoARD. In late December 2006, MoARD conducted a rapid assessment in regions bordering Kenya and the report is being finalized. Preliminary results, however, indicate no cases to date in Ethiopia even from high risk areas such as Moyale zone. WHO and FAO, in collaboration with the Government and international partners, are closely monitoring the situation. Meanwhile, an assessment mission comprised of FMoH, Water Resource Ministry, UNICEF and WHO, has been deployed to Somali Region from 15 to 21 January 2007. RVF is an acute fever-causing viral disease that affects domestic animals and humans. RVF is most commonly associated with mosquito-borne epidemics during years of unusually heavy rainfall.
