Source: UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs Headlines WHO, SMOH, UNICEF and health partners in South Darfur conduct polio mass vaccination campaign targeting more than 760,000 children less than 5 years on 23-25 October 2007. UNICEF supports WD State Ministry of Health to conduct a one day workshop on HIV/AIDS awareness for women in Ardamata Camp. Around 550,000 NFIs to be distributed through implementing partner Spanish Red Cross, Key overall developments Indoor residual spraying (IRS) campaign concluded in Zamzam camp. UNDP, in partnership with AMIS, trained 29 AMIS' Women Desk Officers on issues related to Sexual and Gender -based Violence. WHO supports water quality activities in camps and towns in West Darfur. Needs and response by sector Food Security and Livelihoods North Darfur October distributions commenced and 174,770 people in North Darfur received WFP food assistance in the preceding week WFP verification exercises were carried out for new arrivals in Zamzam IDP camp (1,377 people) and Shadad IDP camp (1,136 people). South Darfur WFP food distribution was completed for: 1,481 returnees at Beida; 5,822 refugees at Um-shalaya camp; 88,719 IDPs in seven Geneina area camps; and a further 12,242 IDPs in Mornei. West Darfur At Zalingei, 11,421 beneficiaries received WFP food assistance at Alkaranik camp. Due to insecurity, WFP food distribution could not be carried out for 44,490 people at Muhajeria in the preceding week. Health and Nutrition North Darfur WHO in collaboration with SMOH surveillance directorate, malaria and leishmaniasis control director conducted a 3-day training/workshop on leishmaniasis case management and investigation. The case definition for all diseases under surveillance was presented during the training. AWD scenario of containment and threshold triggering action were the other topics discussed. The workshop targeted 52 medical personnel from both Kebkabiya Hospital and MSF-B staff working in Kebkabiya locality. A joint team from WHO and SMOH conducted a monitoring visit to 28 (48%) water sources from the total of 54 sources in El Fasher town. The team conducted simple water testing which included free chlorine residual (FCR) and PH. The results showed that 10 of the water sources having nil of FCR (36%) and 18 (64%) of the water sources showed between 0.1&0.3. For the H2S, 9 samples were taken from all the sources of which 1 was positive (Elmashtal well)) and 7 of them were negative. The team advised the water attendants on the importance of chlorination. Meanwhile, in Surf Umra the team conducted chlorination testing to 7 water sources which showed all the sources to be between 0.2 and 0.4 The indoor residual spraying (IRS) campaign in Zamzam camp was completed. Around 4650 huts and 5552 shelters were covered in the campaign. WHO provided 90 K G/ WP of Deltamethrine, 16 masks, 16 goggles, and 16 overalls for the spray men. WHO supported MOH with 10 litres of Deltamethrine, 3 protective clothes, 3 masks to the maternity hospital to control the insects in the hospital. While plans have been finalized to conduct indoor residual spraying campaign in Elsalam. The exercise will commence next week. To strengthen malaria campaign in Darfur, WHO will support MDM Greece in the conduct of trainings for the implementation of the New Malaria Treatment protocol. This followed the meeting held with the Roll Back Malaria Coordinator and Curative Medicine Director from the SMOH. Trainings on Clinical management of rape, STI Management and general awareness on the HIV/AIDS pandemic will be the key areas of focus for the initial implementation phase of the WHO HIV/AIDS Programme for North Darfur. This was the result of the recent meeting held between the WHO HIV/AIDS Officer and heath partners in North Darfur. The UNICEF-supported community radio programme in North Darfur has been broadcasting six different messages designed to raise awareness and understanding of acute watery diarrhoea and cholera. In addition, the programme two specialists from the State Ministry of Health as part of an ongoing effort to reduce the risks of water-borne diseases in local communities. UNICEF has supported the Child Friendly Community Initiative programme in a series community mobilization activities related to harvesting and insecticide awareness. Additional health supplies were provided by UNICEF this week to its implementing partners including the State Ministry of Health, Relief International, Partner Aid International and International Rescue Committee. In addition, 6,000 long lasting bed nets to protect against malaria have been provided to the State Ministry of Health and Spanish Red Cross to assist newly arriving pregnant women and children in Zamzam IDP camp. With support from UNICEF, the El Fasher Rural Development Network completed construction of 11 permanent classrooms in schools across rural localities in El Fasher. UNICEF is also supporting the local community in Donki Shatta to run a new pre-school programme, providing access to psychosocial support and recreational activities for 133 pre-school children. South Darfur WHO, SMOH, UNICEF and the health partners in South Darfur will conduct the polio mass vaccination campaign targeting more than 760,000 children less than 5 years on 23-25 October 2007. The security condition has worsened over the last four weeks. The number of health reporting units has been reduced in Muhajuria and some clinics in Abu Ajura- Geredha corridor and Yassin clinics operated by MSF.H, ARC and Merlin have been evacuated. The State Ministry of Health (South Darfur) in collaboration with WHO conducted a training workshop in Kutum on case definition and surveillance enhancement for the 30 health staff working in Kutum Hospital and the IDP camps. WHO in collaboration with SMoH conducted a spray campaign for 5 days in Alsalam IDPs camp. Alsalam is an IDP camp is located 17 km south from Nyala, hosting 37,000 IDPs. IDPs continue to arrive which has reflected the new extensions of the household and a new environmental picture. WES, CARE and ACF carry-out water and sanitation activities in the camp. In Tulus Locality, WHO ensured the delivery of life saving drugs and emergency items for the mobile clinic. Recently, around 8000 IDPs arrived in the area due to tribal conflicts in the neighbouring towns. West Darfur There were two reported cases of neonatal tetanus from Um Dukhun. The first case is a 6-day old born in Um Dukhun town by a mother who did not receive any antenatal care. While the 2nd case was born in a village- two and half hours travel by a donkey. The mother had not been attended by antenatal care. The patient was admitted and the condition has improved. There were two reported cases of acute flaccid paralysis (epidemiological week 41) from Bendisi and Habila areas. WHO and SMoH have sent samples from Bendisi to Khartoum while samples from Habila are expected soon. The samples are sent to the national laboratory for further investigation. WHO in collaboration with SMoH conducted two trainings on the new malaria treatment protocols for 38 doctors from El Geneina and 17 doctors from Zaleingi. Vector control campaign in West Darfur was completed with these results: 1829 breeding sites were treated with insecticides, 1182 shelters were sprayed in Hugag camp, 6179 shelters in Durti host community and camp, and 12,117 shelters in Ardamata host community were covered during the indoor residual spraying. WHO supports the water quality activities in camps and towns in West Darfur. Regular water quality monitoring and assessment is carried out in towns and in Krenik and Habila in collaboration with SC-US. WHO provides the necessary laboratory equipment and reagents. Meanwhile, WHO provided reagents which consist of pool-testers, phenol red, and boxes of DPD 1&3 to Tri-angle for water quality activities. In line with water quality activities in West Darfur, a total of 54 samples were monitored and surveyed in Abuzer, Hugag, Riyadh, Kringding, Ardamata and Durti camps while 39 samples had readings of between 0.3-0.6mg/l. Information on samples/water points with below 0.3mg/l and above 0.6 will be shared with WASH implementing To enhance solid management activities, WHO continues to monitor proper collection and safe disposal in IDP camps. Recently, 2 waste containers in addition to 2 incinerators were provided to Tri-angle in Riyadh camp. Hygiene promotion teams supported by the State Water Corporation, UNICEF and the NGO Triangle visited 235 households in Riyadh, Dorti and Ardamata camps to disseminate messages on use of latrines and environmental hygiene. In El Geneina and Zalingei, UNICEF and WHO have supported the State Ministry of Health in training 52 doctors on malaria control protocol and guidelines. UNICEF has supported the State Ministry of Health to conduct a one day workshop on HIV/AIDS awareness for 20 women in Ardamata Camp. Non-Food Items (NFIs) and Emergency Shelter Activity was low over the week due to a combination of the lack of humanitarian access and the Eid weekend celebrations. Approvals were authorised for distributions of Non Food Items (NFIs) through the Darfur Common Pipeline in North Darfur in Abu Shouk Camp in El Fasher as replenishment to IDPs. Through implementing partner Spanish Red Cross, approximately 550,000 NFIs will be distributed in the coming days (blankets, jerry cans, sleeping mats and sanitary material). Protection and Human Rights On 7-11 October, UNDP, in partnership with the African Mission in Sudan (AMIS), trained 29 AMIS Women's Desk Officers on issues related to Sexual and Gender -based Violence. To help the AMIS specialized personnel to fulfill their responsibilities in addressing sexual and gender based violence in Darfur, the training included group exercises, role play, planning and evaluation exercise, and a joint session with the Government of Sudan Police Officers. The training was conducted by trainers from the AMIS Civilian Police Training Unit as well as speakers from UNDP, UNFPA and SUDO, a national NGO partner. The event took place at the AMIS Headquarters in North Darfur capital, El-Fasher.
