Key overall developments Muslim Aid is launching an appeal for US $500,000 (=A3250,000), to aid those suffering in Darfur. The Saudi Arabian Red Crescent Association provided a package of humanitarian aid to Darfur region Population movements North Darfur The International Organization for Migration (IOM) provided technical assistance to the INGO Action Contre La Faim (ACF) for the registration of 3,750 individuals from Shangel Tobayi internally displaced persons (IDP) Camp and 925 arrivals at Shadad IDP Camp. In coordination with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), IOM assisted the Spanish Red Cross with the registration of eight individual returnees from Chad to Zam Zam IDP Camp. South Darfur On 30 October, an inter-agency mission comprising IOM, UNICEF, OCHA and WHO assessed the appropriateness of South Sakali as a relocation site. An IOM Verification and Monitoring (VMU) Team conducted individual and group interviews to verify voluntary relocation of 89 IDPs. IOM supported the INGO World Vision International (WVI) to register 150 families for Mosey IDP Camp and 950 families for Mershing IDP Camp. Needs and response by sector Education North Darfur The North Darfur State Ministry of Education has been supported by UNICEF to construct five new classrooms at the El Manura School for nomadic internally displaced persons in El Fasher - the classrooms will benefit some 250 children. With support from UNICEF, the State Ministry of Education has also completed work on two new classrooms in Salaam Seven School in Abu Shouk IDP Camp. Additionally, 53 new classrooms in Shangil Tobayi, 20 classrooms in Kutum and 40 in Kassab IDP Camp are also being constructed with assistance from UNICEF. West Darfur UNICEF provided Save the Children-US with more than 300 student and classroom materials kits - in addition to more than 150 recreational kits - to support educational activities in Mornei, Umshalaya, Krenik, Furbanga, Habila and El Geneina. Food Security and Livelihoods Oxfam and the Kabkabiya Smallholders Charitable Society (KSCS) held five days of veterinary training for existing and newly qualified paravets in Kabkabiya (North Darfur). However, livelihoods projects outside the town have been limited due to the poor security situation. Health and Nutrition North Darfur With support from the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF, the SMoH conducted an emergency National Immunization Days in the state from 23- 25 October, targeting 350,882 children under five years. In addition to logistics support, the campaign was technically supported by WHO with the presence of the senior polio technical officer from Geneva. The three days exercise was implemented without major incident in and out of El Fasher. Oxfam hygiene campaigns in Abu Shouk IDP Camp (North Darfur) have resulted in 2,600 jerry cans cleaned and 12 clean-up campaigns undertaken by nearly 6,000 residents. Oxfam public health workers in Shangil Tobayi (North Darfur) carried out hygiene promotion visits to 2,270 homes in the town and surrounding camps. UNICEF provided nutritional supplies in the form of 90 cartons of therapeutic milk and 60 cartons of nutritional paste to the State Ministry of Health (SMoH) for use in feeding programmes in El Fasher and Kabkabiya. Aditionally, UNICEF also provided 291 cartons of nutritional paste, 125 cartons of therapeutic milk and 500 mosquito nets to the NGO Action Contre La Faim for Abu Shouk and As Salaam IDP Camps. In As Salaam IDP Camp, UNICEF supported CHF International and the Binaa Charity Association to organize drama shows on the issue of HIV/AIDS, as part of an awareness-raising campaign. To help improve hygiene practices amongst IDPs in Finna and Derbat (Jebel Marra), UNICEF provided 1,000 cartons of soap. Primary health care kits and drugs were provided by UNICEF to Muslim Aid to support the health needs of an estimated 18,000 people in the new Sakali IDP Camp. South Darfur WHO, SMOH, UNICEF, and health sector NGOs in South Darfur have mobilised and conducted a polio vaccination campaign targeting 760,000 children under 5 years on 23-25 October 2007. UNICEF reports that the polio immunization campaign recently undertaken in South Darfur has been successful, with only rural areas and Buram and the Kalma IDP Camp not being fully covered. Efforts continue to cover areas not reached in the initial campaign. West Darfur Polio immunization efforts supported by UNICEF and WHO have reached 85% of the intended children in West Darfur, with a number of villages not reached due to access constraints, and vaccinators unable to reach camps around Zalingei due to insecurity and heightened tensions. UNICEF provided 70 cartons of nutritional paste to the NGO Tear Fund to support feeding programmes in Beida. Also, Vitamin A supplements were provided to areas of Jebel Marra to support supplementation campaigns for more than 18,000 children WHO provided 120 liters of insecticides for indoor residual spraying and larviciding exercises in Garsila and Mukjar IDP Camps. A water quality training course - supported by WHO - was held for 30 water and sanitation workers/staff from various agencies and organizations working in Zalingei. WHO facilitated the ophthalmological assessment and on the job training for International Medical Corps (IMC) health staff in both Elriad and Abuzar IDP Camps to help improve the case management for eye infection cases. Non-Food Items (NFIs) During a ten day mission the International Committee for the Red Cross (ICRC) distributed aid and repaired five water sources for 15,000 people in Haskanita town (South Darfur) - 5,560 were IDPs and the rest were from nearby villages. In North Darfur, UNICEF has provided recreational materials for children in child friendly spaces in Abu Shouk IDP Camp run by the NGO Enfants du Monde (EMDH). Newly displaced households were the primary beneficiaries of non-food items (NFIs) through the Darfur Common Pipeline this week. In West Darfur, the United Nations Joint Logistic Center (UNJLC) partnered with Mercy Corps to provide blankets, jerry cans and sleeping mats to 3,000 households. Protection and Human Rights On 01-03 November, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Rule of Law programme in cooperation with the African Centre for Human Rights (AHCR), organised two human rights' training workshops in Kutum (North Darfur). Carried out by two members of the AHCR, the training raised the participants' awareness on basic human rights principles through group discussions, lectures, role plays and presentations. The first workshop took place on 01 November and was attended by some 40 participants representing the civil society, IDPs, host community and community leaders. The second workshop - which took place on 2-3 November - targeted 40 police officers and soldiers. On 06-07 November, UNDP Gender Based Violence Project in cooperation with UNHCR and the UN Volunteer programme, organised a message development workshop at the UNDP supported Justice and Confidence Centre in Durti IDP Camp (West Darfur). The workshop focused on identifying the various problems related to Gender Based Violence (GBV) and developing appropriate messages for the campaign against GBV which is due to take place in West Darfur between November 25 and December 10. The workshop was attended by 45 paralegals, animators, IDPs, and representative from the office of the Wali Advisor. Water and Sanitation Oxfam teams in Kabkabiya (North Darfur) rehabilitated 244 damaged latrines, and constructed eight new latrine units for schools in the town. Oxfam completed the construction of 14 new latrine units for schools in As Salaam IDP Camp (North Darfur). Eight latrine units are currently under construction.
