Headlines
- 357,000 under 5 years old children in North Darfur were targeted in
the recent round of Polio immunization.
- 7,600 nomadic children in 95 schools in Algeneina, Zallingi Krenik and
Wadi Saleh localities (West Darfur) supported with education materials.
- NGO Concern distributed blankets to 14,546 households in the Kulbus
area (West Darfur) in preparation for the cold season.
Population movements
In South Darfur, the International Organization for Migration (IOM)
assisted the International Islamic Relief Organization (IIRO) and the
Sudanese Popular committee Relief (SPCR) to update the registration data
for 3,294 Heads of Households in the database.
IOM witnessed and documented the relocation of 540 households from
Majoak to Sakali resettlement area (South Darfur). IOM's Verification
and Monitoring Unit conducted a verification process for reported
returns to Gabr Al Ganam (North Darfur).
Needs and response by sector
Education
UNICEF provided a range of education materials, including chalk, sitting
mats, classroom materials, chalkboards, student stationery and
recreation kits to the State Ministry of Education (SMoE) to support the
education of 7,600 nomadic children in 95 schools in Algeneina, Zallingi
Krenik and Wadi Saleh localities (West Darfur)
Health and Nutrition
North Darfur
As part of an ongoing awareness-raising campaign, UNICEF supported the
Sudanese NGO Binaa Charity Association (BCA) - in collaboration with the
Cooperative Housing Foundation (CHF) International - to implement a
series of drama events on the issue of HIV/AIDS in Zam Zam IDP Camp. A
group of 25 young people performed the drama shows and disseminated
various message on HIV/AIDS and gender-based violence to an estimated
2,500 community residents.
The World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF and the State Ministry of
Health (SMoH) held the polio national immunization days on 18-20
November 2007. The campaign schedule started in the areas which were not
covered during the last campaign and 357,000 under 5 years old children
in North Darfur were targeted in this round of immunization.
With regards to improving access to the primary health care services and
rehabilitation of health facilities, WHO continued its efforts to
monitor and follow-up the progress of the physical rehabilitation
project of the Um Kadoya health facility - despite the limitation of
movements due to security issues.
WHO in collaboration with the Health Ministry plans to rehabilitate a
health facility in Um Heglieg.
South Darfur
In collaboration with SMoH and Cord aid WHO conducted a one day training
workshop for community health workers in Al Neim and Khour Omer IDP
Camps in Al Deain where 30 participants attended the training on "Case
definition and active case finding of the notifiable diseases."
The acute jaundice syndrome (AJS) outbreak in Al Salam and Kass IDP
Camps has become sporadic and the health situation in both camps has
improved as a result of the coordinated intervention led by WHO,
including health education sessions, hygiene promotion activities and
water and sanitation measures.
West Darfur
Training and refresher courses in disease surveillance and
case-management for health workers in the field is ongoing, operating
out of all field and outreach offices. WHO supported SMoH in carrying
out a three-day training on water quality control in Zaleingi with 30
participants from Water, Environment and Sanitation (WES), NGO partners
and State Ministry of Health (SMOH).
Save the Chidren-US and WHO conducted a three-day training on solid
waste management in Fur Baranga. A total of 20 community hygiene
promoters from Save the Children-US & Intersoss were trained.
UNICEF provided 28 primary health care kits to SIMA, a Sudanese NGO, to
support health care programmes in West Darfur.
With UNICEF assistance, two social workers from the State Ministry of
Social Welfare benefited from a programme on effective training skills
facilitated by the NGO Terre des Hommes, which will enable them to go to
provide training to other colleagues.
Terre des Hommes provided training on social work skills to 32 social
workers (16 from the State Ministry of Social Welfare) as part of an
ongoing pilot training programme supported by UNICEF.
Non-Food Items (NFIs)
The newly displaced populations served last week by the Common Pipeline
in Um Dukhun, West Darfur, were further supported with plastic sheeting
by the United Nations Joint Logistics Center (UNJLC) South Darfur Team
and Mercy Corps.
UNJLC provided two schools in Ed Daen (South Darfur) were with plastic
sheeting, jerry cans and sleeping mats for the children to sit on.
In West Darfur, Concern distributed blankets to 14,546 households in the
Kulbus area in preparation for the cold season.
Water and Sanitation
West Darfur
WHO and partners continue to intensify water quality control activities.
WHO supported Save the Children-US with reagents and water testing kits
for the organization's ongoing water quality monitoring activities in
Krenik and Forbaranga areas (West Darfur). In Krenik, six water points
were checked.
WHO continues its technical and logistical support to SMoH on water
quality monitoring within Geneina town and surrounding IDP camps.
