Headlines
Implementation of the second round of polio national immunization day -
targeting around 357,000 under five children.
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) organized a workshop on
' the role of the signatories of the Darfur Peace Agreement and Armed
Movements in the reconciliation and reconstruction process in Darfur
took place at the University of Zalingei in El Geneina.
Population movements
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) assisted World Vision
International in the registration updating of 1,524 households for Khor
Abbashi internally displaced person (IDP) Camp in Nyala (South Darfur).
IOM and United Nations agencies are monitoring the movement of the IDPs
in Kalma Camp. Recently there was an internal movement of about 100
households from sector eight to sector five in the camp.
Needs and response by sector
Education
North Darfur
UNICEF provided school supplies and materials to primary schools in
Kutum and Kabkabiya, benefiting 29,990 children in Kutum and 20,313 in
Kabkabiya - half of whom are girls.
South Darfur
In partnership between UNICEF and the State Ministry of Education
(SMoE), 50 teachers and volunteers from Nyala, Otash and Dereig - one of
third of whom were women - benefited from training on child protection
and psychosocial support issues. This training will roll out to reach
350 additional teachers in five other locations in South Darfur in the
coming week.
West Darfur
UNICEF provided a range of educational and school materials to the SMoE.
The 750 sitting mats, 400 student stationery kits, 200 classroom kits
and 123 recreation kits will benefit some 2,250 nomadic children in the
Kulbus and Beida localities.
Food Security and Livelihoods
North Darfur
Oxfam will this week start distributing donkey carts to recipients in
Kabkabiya town
Health and Nutrition
North Darfur
Oxfam is intensifying public health work in Abu Shouk IDP Camp following
a significant rise in cases of diarrhoea in the past week (872 cases
this week compared to 530 the previous week, and 471 the week before
that). New water point attendants have been employed to monitor
campaigns to ensure jerry cans are better cleaned and maintained.
Meetings have been held with community leaders and health committees to
plan further actions for the coming week, including increased
chlorination of water and jerry cans and improved garbage disposal.
Oxfam, in conjunction with the BBC World Service Trust, is holding
weekly listening clubs for groups of women, children, youth and sheikhs
in As Salaam IDP Camp - using audio materials to raise awareness of
hygiene issues. Also, the NGO's public health team in Shangil Tobayi is
holding weekly health festivals aimed at spreading messages on good
hygiene practice and to mobilise the community for cleaning campaigns.
The World Health Organization (WHO) - in collaboration with the State
Ministry of Health (SMoH) in North Darfur - started investigating the
bloody diarrhoea cases in Abu Shouk and As Salaam IDP Camps.
Preparations to conduct refresher trainings on case definitions and
management have been finalised.
In collaboration with the SMoH, WHO is conducting indoor residual
spraying in Kassab IDP Camp to complete the master plan for vector
control in the state.
The second round of polio national immunization day - targeting around
357,000 under five children - was implemented. Preliminary results from
different areas received are showing good geographical coverage
particularly in areas which were tagged as gap areas in the past. The
second round was implemented with good quality indicators and wide
coverage, apart from areas of Disa and Hashaba which remain as
'challenge' due to security reasons.
With support from WHO and the SMoH, the physical rehabilitation of a
health facility in Um Kadoya will be completed within the week.
WHO and the SMoH are jointly conducting support supervision to all
clinics in IDP camps to help solve problems and find out ways on how to
best support INGOs to deliver primary health care quality services to
IDPs in North Darfur. To date, the team has covered three clinics in Abu
Shouk IDP Camp.
Monitoring and supervision, by WHO, of integrated management of
childhood illness (IMCI) implementing facilities has continued and is
targeting 34 health facilities in El Fasher and Kutum localities.
South Darfur
UNICEF and the SMoH organized health education and hygiene promotion
activities in the Jebel Marra areas of Finna and Saboon Elfagour for 100
community volunteers who will now go on to implement health promotion
activities reaching an estimated 318,000 people.
A five-day training programme was conducted by UNICEF and the
Reproductive Health Unit of the SMoH, for 107 traditional birth
attendants in Finna and Saboon Elfagour areas of East Jebel Marra.
Issues focused on included clean safe delivery, and early referral of
cases for ante-natal and hospital care.
Eight youth peer education sessions on HIV/AIDS were conducted in Kalma
IDP Camp and three sessions in Otash IDP Camp - with the support of
UNICEF and NGO partners - benefiting 3,500 young people. The sessions
aimed at increasing knowledge and understanding about the HIV virus.
West Darfur
Hygiene promotion activities undertaken by the State Water Corporation
(SWC), with the support of UNICEF, reached 272 households in Ardamata,
Durti, and Ryad IDP Camps.
SWC, with support from UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO),
organized a water quality training course for 30 participants from NGOs
in Zalingei.
Eight cartons of nutritional paste were provided by UNICEF to Save the
Children-US to support specialist feeding programmes in five locations
in El Geneina, Baranga and Habilla.
UNICEF also provided eight tins of vitamin A supplements to Tear Fund
for activities in four locations around Beida.
The SMoH was provided with 30 cartons of therapeutic milk and five
cartons of nutritional paste, by UNICEF, to support activities in the
therapeutic feeding centres in El Geneina.
An ongoing immunization campaign, supported by UNICEF, provided 8,782
children in Killing and 4,982 in Golo with vitamin A supplements.
Medair provided a refresher course for 20 hygiene coordinators and an
initial training course for ten health education coordinators in El
Geneina from 18-22 November.
>From 25-28 November, Medair held an annual refresher course for 44
clinic assistants in West Darfur. A second course will be held from
01-04 December for 42 staff members from the 20 clinics Medair supports
in West Darfur.
The second round of the 17th polio immunization campaign was completed
and results are currently being compiled. Plans for Jebel Marra have
been finalised and the team of 12 persons from WHO, UNICEF and SMoH will
work on the campaign in Jebel Mara - a gap area during the past
campaigns due to security reasons. The transport of necessary supplies
for the campaign has been done through the collaborative efforts of WHO
and UNICEF.
WHO has supported the SMoH Malaria Program, in conducting vector control
activities which include larviciding, community mobilization and
awareness sessions and training of community health/hygiene promoters on
vector control methods in Garseila, Bendsi, Mukjar and Daleij
localities.
Non-Food Items (NFIs)
North Darfur
The Spanish Red Cross distributions - targeting 12,360 households - for
replenishment and preparation for the cold season are on-going in Zam
Zam IDP Camp. Items being distributed include blankets, sleeping mats,
jerry cans, and sanitary materials.
South Darfur
The NGO Humedica distributed NFI kits from the United Nations Joint
Logistics Center (UNJLC) Common Pipeline to 150 newly displaced
households from Kalma and Buram in Al Salam IDP Camp. Additional Common
Pipeline activities in South Darfur included a Medecins Sans Frontieres
(MSF) -Holland distribution of 500 blankets to each of their clinics in
Muhajeria, Sakali, Feina, and Kalma and a CHF International distribution
of 1,000 pieces of plastic sheeting as part of their emergency shelter
kits in Kass.
West Darfur
Save the Children-US distributed NFI kits to 50 households affected by
fires in Kenerek IDP Camp, while Catholic Relief Services (CRS)
distributed sleeping mats, clothing, blankets and jerry cans to 1,254
newly displaced households in Bir Dageeg.
Protection and Human Rights
North Darfur
To commemorate the 18th anniversary of the United Nations Convention on
the Rights of the Child an event was organized by the State Council for
Child Welfare, with assistance from UNICEF. Hundreds of children in four
secondary schools (girls and boys) and two kindergartens helped to
spread key messages on the rights of children under the theme of "Watch,
Listen, Talk and Act". Activities included dance, drama, poetry, jokes
and music and a tug-of-war contest.
West Darfur
On 19-20 November, the UNDP Rule of Law Programme in Darfur, in close
collaboration with UNMIS, the Centre for Peace and Development Studies,
and the University of Zalingei, organized a workshop on 'the role of the
signatories of the Darfur Peace Agreement and Armed Movements in the
reconciliation and reconstruction process in Darfur'. The event took
place at the University of Zalingei in El Geneina and attracted over 70
representatives of the Transitional Darfur Regional Authority (TDRA),
the judiciary, police officers, prosecutors, political parties, lawyers,
the Humanitarian Aid Commission (HAC), State Legislature, civil society
organizations, native administration and several IDP leaders. In
addition to addressing the role of Darfur Peace Agreement (DPA)
signatories and Armed Movements in the reconciliation and reconstruction
in Darfur, several papers were presented to shed light on the necessary
steps to be taken to achieve peace and reconciliation in the region, and
the requirements of a transition from armed movements into political
parties.
Water and Sanitation
North Darfur
Efforts continued by the State Water Corporation (SWC), with the
assistance of UNICEF, to improve water and sanitation in a number of
areas of North Darfur:
- In Dar Salam, rehabilitation of a water yard at Um Deraisaya was
completed, benefiting 5,000 people;
- In El Fasher rural areas, 4,500 people benefited from the drilling of
nine new boreholes and hand-pumps;
- Repair work was undertaken on water facilities in As Salaam, Kassab
and Zam Zam IDP Camps;
In Kutum the SWC and UNICEF supported communities to construct 150
household latrines.
In Kassab SWC and UNICEF hygiene promotion teams worked with IDPs to
clean 504 jerry cans. Also, 27 household hygiene promotion visits were
conducted, reaching 113 persons.
South Darfur
To improve access to safe sanitation in IDP camps, UNICEF and the SWC:
- Constructed 125 new household latrines in Al Salam, Otash and Ed Daein
IDP Camps;
- rehabilitated 15 household latrines in Khor Omar and 25 in Otash IDP
Camps;
- Organized seven clean up campaigns in Mossei and Al Salam IDP Camps;
- and, conducted hygiene promotion sessions in Mossei and Otash IDP
Camps reaching 3,255 camp residents.
The outbreak of acute jaundice syndrome in Al Salam is now sporadic. The
health situation in camps improved due to the coordinated interventions
led by the WHO. Interventions in camps included health education
sessions, hygiene promotion activities and water and sanitation
measures.
Monitoring visits to the Nyala Teaching Hospital and other hospitals in
all of Darfur are on going to help monitor the free access of the IDPs
to hospital services. To ensure delivery of proper health services to
IDPs, WHO is working with other agencies in the planning of the
rehabilitation of Tulus Hospital (South Darfur).
West Darfur
WHO continued extending support to the Save the Children-US with
re-agents and water testing kits for their ongoing water quality
monitoring activities in Krenik and Forbaranga area.
