Headlines
In North Darfur, Common Pipeline distributions in preparation for the
winter season were made to 12,360 households by the Spanish Red Cross.
In West Darfur, approximately 800 primary school and 300 secondary
school students were provided with information on gender-based violence
and women's rights, through activities led by the Advisor to the
Governor and supported by UNICEF.
Population movements
In North Darfur, the International Organization for Migration (IOM)
assisted Save the Children in the registration of 474 household (2370
individuals) refugee returnees from Chad in Tandosa village (in
Furbronga, West Darfur). The registration forms were verified and data
entry has commenced.
Needs and response by sector
Education
North Darfur
UNICEF supported the State Ministry of Education (SMoE) in the
construction of 60 semi-permanent classrooms for 3,300 children in Kutum
and Kassab IDP Camps, as well as the construction of 48 classrooms in
Abu Shouk IDP Camp benefiting over 2,640 children. While in Shangil
Tobayi, the Parent Teachers Committee was supported by UNICEF to
completed construction of 19 classrooms benefiting over 1,045 children.
In collaboration with UNICEF and funded by El Fasher locality, the SMoE
is currently conducting training for 30 mathematics teachers, including
12 women, to improve the performance of children in the subject.
South Darfur
Educational supplies were provided by UNICEF to the East Jebel Marra
region through the NGOs Fienna and Samaritan's Purse. Supplies included
26 blackboards, 16 recreation Kits, 16 teacher's kits, 14 boxes of chalk
and 11 boxes of pens to benefit more than 11,000 children in the area.
West Darfur
The State SMoE was provided with an additional 1,700 floor mats by
UNICEF, to support 5,100 children studying in schools in Beida, Arara
and Forobaranga.
Health and Nutrition
North Darfur
In response to a recent significant increase in diarrhoea cases in Abu
Shouk IDP Camp, Oxfam's public health teams organised intensified
campaigns for cleaning jerry cans and chlorinating water in the camp.
Consequently, this week the number of cases has dropped considerably -
down from 872 to 476.
UNICEF provided emergency health supplies including 13 primary health
centre kits and 2,000 mosquito nets to the NGO Al Massar in Kabkabiya,
benefiting 57,000 beneficiaries in nomadic communities and 51,000
residents in Gharrat Zawiya, Mustariha, Al Harra, Jaldama, and Kala'a
localities.
South Darfur
Household hygiene was supported by UNICEF with the provision of 1,530
cartons of soap in Otash, Khor Omar and Sekalei IDP Camps. Three child
hygiene promotion training courses were conducted in Al Salam and Kalma
IDP Camps, with UNICEF support, attended by 90 participants.
UNICEF provided 29 primary health centre kits to the NGO Merlin for
distribution in Gereida IDP Camp and surrounding areas, benefiting
approximately 95,000 people.
A refresher training was supported by UNICEF for 30 'peer youth
educators' responsible for raising awareness of HIV and AIDS in Kalma,
Al Salam and Otash IDP Camps with volunteers from the Sudanese Red
Crescent and State AIDS Programme.
West Darfur
Due to the increase in the number of reported cases of malaria, the
World Health Organization (WHO) supported the SMoH in West Darfur in the
conduct of malaria health services survey in Bendisi, Mukjar, Deleij,
and Garseila areas.
Monitoring and technical support were provided by WHO to 13 health staff
working within Geneina Hospital, Geneina Eye Hospital, Fur Baranga,
Zaleingi, Kulbus and Garsila rural hospitals.
Non-Food Items (NFIs)
North Darfur
In North Darfur, Common Pipeline distributions in preparation for the
winter season were made to 12,360 households by the Spanish Red Cross.
The items distributed for winterization included one blanket, one jerry
can, one sleeping mat, and one piece of sanitary material. In As Salaam
Camp, UNJLC partnered with the IRC to distribute non-food items (NFIs)
to 215 vulnerable households not previously served along with 265 pieces
of plastic sheeting to rehabilitate the roof of a feeding center. In
South Darfur, Samaritan's Purse distributed NFIs to 139 newly-displaced
households in Sania Afandu and 373 newly-displaced households in Yassin.
Protection and Human Rights
North Darfur
In collaboration with UNOCHA, UNICEF undertook a workshop on
psychosocial support to survivors of gender-based violence for 15
participants from United Nations agencies and NGOs. The workshop focused
on developing key principles for the implementation of the psychosocial
activities, reviewing existing networks for psychosocial support and
discussing methods of monitoring and evaluation.
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Rule of Law Programme in
North Darfur, in collaboration with El Fasher University, organized a
seminar on "Development and Sustainable Peace in Darfur" on 29 November
at El Fasher University. Through a presentation and group discussions,
the seminar draw attention on the role of development in the sustainable
peace process in Darfur. Adam Ahmed Suleiman, Professor at El Fasher
University, presented a paper on "the Challenges of the reconstruction
process in the post-conflict stage in Darfur". The event attracted over
250 participants from the local authorities, academics, IDPs, community
leaders, and National and International NGOs.
South Darfur
In partnership with UNICEF, the SMoE embarked on a training course for
100 teachers, half of whom are women, focusing on child protection
issues including provision of psychosocial support.
West Darfur
In conjunction with the 16 Days of Activism on Violence Against Women,
some 800 primary school and 300 secondary school students were provided
with information on gender-based violence and women's rights, through
activities led by the Advisor to the Governor and supported by UNICEF.
Five police officer and two social workers from the State Ministry of
Social Welfare in South Darfur undertook a 5-day on the job training
course at the Child and Family Protection Unit in Khartoum, as part of a
programme to develop Units in the Darfur states. These units, managed by
the police and supported by UNICEF, provide confidential and
professional support to women and children who have been victims of
crime.
On December 1-4, UNDP in collaboration with UNICEF and Development
Alternatives Initiatives (DAI) organized a workshop on the "Testimony
Taking and Confidentiality" at UNDP supported Durti Justice and
Confidence Centre in Geneina, West Darfur. Through lectures, interactive
sessions, and group work, the workshop trained 25 paralegals and
Government of Sudan Police in all skills pertaining to confidentiality
and testimony taking to enable them to be more effective in dealing with
the clients, handling justice cases, and building trust with law
enforcement agencies. The workshop was members of WAD Centre for Legal
Aid and UNICEF.
Water and Sanitation
North Darfur
In rural areas of Kittim, UNICEF and the State Water Corporation worked
with local communities in Kassab to construct 100 household latrines in
Kassab village, in addition to decontaminating 712 jerry cans, and
conducting 48 household hygiene education visits reaching 127 people.
South Darfur
The International Development and Relief Body (IDRB) Sudan - in
coordination with the water and environmental sanitation (WES) South
Darfur - constructed 100 household latrines for IDPs in Kass.
In response to the establishment of the new Sekalei IDP Camp, UNICEF
supported the drilling of a bore well to serve new arrivals.
To improve access to safe sanitation, UNICEF and the State Water
Corporation supported the construction of 20 new household latrines, and
rehabilitated a further 21 in Al Salam IDP Camp. Ten clean up campaigns
were undertaken in Al Salam, Otash, Mossei, Kalma and Sekalei IDP Camps.
In addition, 40 home visits to promote hygiene education were conducted
in Al Salam IDP Camp, while 1,324 people in Mossei IDP Camp benefited
from hygiene promotion sessions.
West Darfur
In the Jebel Moon area 1,000 people now have access to clean water as a
result of the partnership between UNICEF and the NGO International Aid
Services (IAS) following the installation of four new handpumps.
UNICEF and the State Water Corporation conducted 296 household hygiene
education visits amongst IDPs in West Darfur, and more than 10,000
cartons of soap were distributed to households.
