Source: UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs Headlines - Polio immunization campaigns continued in South Darfur, with 35,000 children reached by vaccinators in the Jebel Marra region. - Training programmes on psychosocial support for children affected by armed conflict was supported by UNICEF for 20 community workers in Zalingei (West Dafur). Needs and response by sector Education South Darfur The State Ministry of Education (SMoE) and the Office of the State Wali confirmed that the State Government will make a contribution of 40 per cent towards the joint government and UNICEF budget for education in South Darfur in 2008. West Darfur In the western Jebel Marra region 3,200 children will benefit from 140 school tents, provided by UNICEF to the NGO Solidarite. Food Security and Livelihoods West Darfur Save the Children-US conducted the following food distributions: In Dorti IDP Camp, 169.245 metric tons (MT) of food was distributed to 9,403 beneficiaries; In Jammaa IDP Camp, 31.981 MT of food was distributed to 1,778 beneficiaries; In Hujaj IDP Camp, 70.817 MT of food commodities was distributed to 3,933 beneficiaries. Health and Nutrition North Darfur In Abu Shouk and As Salaam IDP Camps, Oxfam's public health team commissioned IDP womens' committees to produce handmade red World AIDS Day ribbons for Oxfam staff to wear - providing a livelihoods opportunity to the women and also raising awareness of HIV throughout the camps. Oxfam distributed a new supply of soap to over 500 households in Shangil Tobayi. Hygiene tools including wheelbarrows, rakes and brooms were also distributed to encourage community cleaning campaigns. As part of ongoing anti-malaria activities, the State Ministry of Health (SMoH) was supported by UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO), along with local residents, to spray more than 32,000 shelters in the Abu Shouk IDP Camp. South Darfur In Kalma IDP Camp, Oxfam participated in a HIV/AIDS awareness-raising and training day organised by the Ministry of Health. Oxfam staff also conducted further training sessions for 60 IDP residents and distributed over 500 HIV/AIDS posters throughout the camp. Polio immunization campaigns continued in South Darfur, with 35,000 children reached by vaccinators in the Jebel Marra region. UNICEF provided 650 cartons of nutritional paste to the SMoH, Action Contre la Faim, and Tearfund to support specialist feeding programmes for children in South Darfur. Government partners and civil society bodies were supported by UNICEF in commemorating World AIDS Day. A carnival, attracting some 25,000 people, was held in Nyala to disseminate information and advice about HIV and AIDS to local people through mobile theatres, exhibitions and special events. More than 10,000 information materials including posters and factsheets on HIV and AIDS were distributed in Nyala, Kass and Ed Daein, while three radio shows were aired on Nyala Radio, reaching an estimated 30,000 listeners. West Darfur Health supplies, including midwifery kits, obstetric surgical kits, nebuliser sets, oxygen compressors, syringes and essential drugs were provided by UNICEF to local health partners across West Darfur. UNICEF also provided a number of nutritional supplies, including equipment for measuring children's height and weight, to the NGO Tearfund to support programmes in the Beida area. To mark World AIDS Day, UNICEF supported the display of five new information boards around Geneina town, providing important advice on HIV and AIDS. Non-Food Items (NFIs) South Darfur The NGO Solidarite provided non-food items (NFIs) from the The United Nations Joint Logistics Center (UNJLC) Common Pipeline to 91 disaster-affected households in Shearia and Rehaid El-Fursan Rural Development supported 40 disaster-affected households in Otash. Also, 105 newly displaced households in As Salam IDP Camp received NFIs distributed by Humedica, which included plastic sheeting, blankets, sleeping mats, jerry cans, and women's clothing. West Darfur UNJLC worked with the Sudanese Red Crescent (SRC) and Catholic Relief Services (CRS) to provide replenishments of NFIs to 588 households in Gokar and 3,123 households in Kulbus, respectively. Items provided included blankets, jerry cans, women's clothing, and sleeping mats Protection and Human Rights West Darfur Training programmes on psychosocial support for children affected by armed conflict was supported by UNICEF for 20 community workers in Zalingei. These workers will now go on to deliver training in their own communities. At the same time, five staff members from the newly opened Child and Family Protection Unit in El Geneina - which provides professional legal and psychosocial support to victims of crime - benefited from UNICEF-supported training on testimony-taking. On 09 December, IDP women from four camps in Geneina participated in a culmination celebration of the 16 day campaign of activism to stop violence against women. The celebration was held in Krinding 1 Camp. The aim of the celebration was to increase knowledge and awareness among the audience about violence against women both in and around the camps. Women shared experiences, thoughts and feelings through speeches, poetry, drama, and song. The celebration was attended by Save the Children management, representatives from various INGO, representatives from United Nations agencies, community members and community leaders. Several sheiks also made speeches advocating for women's rights, female empowerment and gender equality. Water and Sanitation North Darfur In the El Fasher rural district UNICEF supported the State Water Corporation (SWC) to construct a new latrine for the area's primary school, while two similar latrines were constructed in primary schools in Dar El Salaam. South Darfur In Kalma IDP Camp, Oxfam constructed 70 new double-pit latrines and water pipes have been extended by 325 metres to reach newly displaced and shifting populations in the camp. Oxfam also conducted a new sanitation survey at water points throughout the camp to help determine any gaps in water distribution. The SWC, supported by UNICEF, constructed 66 new household latrines and one school latrine in Al Salam and Secalei IDP Camps, and 22 existing latrines were rehabilitated in Otash IDP Camp. Meanwhile in Mossei IDP Camp, two clean-up campaigns were undertaken as part of ongoing efforts to improve general hygiene practices. Ongoing hygiene promotion activities, led by SWC and supported by UNICEF, reached over 1,300 people in Otash and Mossei IDP Camps. In Kass, 60 students benefited from a similar programme run through local schools. West Darfur UNICEF and the SWC drilled 14 new boreholes in the Habila area to increase access to water for local residents. The SWC, assisted by UNICEF, undertook 320 home visits in Dorti, Ryad and Ardamata IDP Camps to promote health and hygiene practices. The water yard in Sirba IDP Camp was rehabilitated by Save the Children-US. The water yard now has 60 taps in three distribution points serving a total of 15,000 beneficiaries. Also in Sirba IDP Camp, four hand pumps were rehabilitated serving an additional 2,000 beneficiaries. Save the Children-US finished the construction of a sub-surface dam in Habila IDP Camp. The construction of a second sub-surface dam will start within the next few days. Also, as a part of the solid waste disposal program, bins have been sent to Habila for placement in various locations throughout the camp, from these locations a tractor will be used to dispose of the waste to a location outside of the camp.
