A weekly report on major developments concerning relief operations in
southern Sudan
SEEDS AND TOOLS UPDATE
OLS seeds and tools activities continued this week despite ongoing
logistical constraints. UNICEF chartered the WFP-contracted Buffalo
aircraft and made four flights to deliver seeds, tools and garden kits
totaling 12,562kg to Akoc and Mapel in Bahr el Ghazal and Duar and Leer in
Upper Nile. Flights scheduled for Ganyliel and Nyal were delayed due to
unlandable airstrips. Agaigai and Thiek Thou, Bahr el Ghazal, are
targeted for deliveries in the coming week.
COMMUNITY HEALTH TRAINEES GRADUATE
Twenty-four students of the OLS NGO International Rescue Committee (IRC)
graduated on 30 June from a community health workers training in Ganyliel,
Upper Nile, having completed nine months of classroom and clinical
instruction. The new graduates will return to their home areas of Mading,
Motot, Yuai, Wanding, and Manajang to begin health work. The students
were sponsored by OLS NGOs Medecins du Monde (MDM), the Coordinating
Committee for Voluntary Services (COSV), Christian Mission Aid (CMA) and
IRC.
MEDAIR STAFF RELOCATE FROM ATAR
Three staff of the OLS NGO MEDAIR temporarily relocated from Atar,
Jonglei, to Lokichokio on 26 June due to insecurity. The staff were flown
to Lokichokio after having moved into the bush by foot in the early hours
of the morning on the advice of local counterparts. The OLS Security
Officer plans to visit the town to assess its security and will advise
MEDAIR when it is safe to resume programme activities.
BOMBS DROPPED ON PANYAGOR
Staff of OLS NGO Medecins sans Frontieres (MSF)-Holland reported that five
bombs were dropped on Panyagor, Jonglei, on 26 June. Bombs were also
reportedly dropped on nearby Kongor. There were no injuries reported.
OLS STAFF RELOCATE TO PANYAGOR
Staff of OLS NGO CARE together with four WFP airfield construction workers
relocated temporarily from Wiernyol to Panyagor on 28 June as a
precautionary measure on the advice of SRRA counterparts. They returned
to Wiernyol the following morning.
WFP-CONTRACTED BUFFALO AIRCRAFT TEMPORARILY GROUNDED IN AGAIGAI
The WFP-contracted Buffalo aircraft (call sign B5) was temporarily
grounded in Agaigai, Bahr el Ghazal, on 1 July when it's ground power unit
(GPU) failed to work during an attempted take-off. The crew was flown to
Lokichokio the same day. The aircraft was flown to Lokichokio on 2 July
and is currently operational.
WFP UPDATE
WFP continued food deliveries during 21-30 June to locations in southern
Sudan by air and road, with a total of 465 metric tonnes (mt) delivered to
about 110,000 beneficiaries. The following was delivered on behalf of
WFP-Khartoum: 16.2mt was delivered to 1,850 beneficiaries in Kapoeta,
16.2mt was delivered to 1,500 beneficiaries in Torit, 32.4mt was delivered
to 8,000 beneficiaries in Gogrial and 48.5mt was delivered to 7,500
beneficiaries in Nasir.
In Bahr el Ghazal, a distribution in Ayein resumed following a disruption
due to reports of insecurity. A total 144mt was delivered to 42,760
targeted beneficiaries. Deliveries to Akoc began with a supply of 37mt.
In Jonglei/Upper Nile, delivery of 48mt took place to Leer for 18,000
beneficiaries. In Equatoria, the final deliveries to Lopit arrived and
distribution to 38,000 beneficiaries is ongoing. In Yei County, 117mt
were delivered to Kaya and Bazi to be distributed in the coming week. In
Yei town, 76.2mt have been delivered for use in food-for-work projects.
Finally 2,181 beneficiaries in Lacha Camp, Mundri County, received
approximately 9mt of food.
During 22-28 June, WFP delivered 68.02mt of food to 4,859 beneficiaries in
support of NGO programmes in southern Sudan. Long-term training programmes
were supported with 168 beneficiaries receiving 1.55mt of food for
programmes of the IRC, CMA, Action Contre la Faim and Veterinaires sans
Frontieres-Belgium in Langken, Billing, Nimule and Ayod. In-patient
feeding was supplied to 271 patients of MSF-Holland, MDM, MSF-Belgium and
Norwegian People's Aid (NPA) in Langken, Mankien, Akobo and Yei.
Food-for-work was supported with 45mt issued to 3,018 beneficiaries of
MDM, Medic and NPA in Mankien, Ayod and Yei. Some 262 beneficiaries of
MEDAIR received 0.35mt of food in Atar.
