ACTIVITIES AND UPDATES
Assistance to Burundians expelled from Tanzania
The Government project for the reintegration of war-affected persons
(PARESI) registered 79 Burundians (41 families) expelled from Tanzania who
arrived through the entry points of Kobero/Muyinga Province 15 persons (6
families), Mishiha/Cankuzo Province 29 persons (15 families),
Gisuru/Ruyigi Province 8 (7families) and Mabanda/Makamba Province 27 (13
families). Since 01 January, 3,815 expelled persons (1,628 families) have
returned to their home country.
Repatriation of Burundian refugees
Over the reporting period, 4,407 Burundian refugees returned to Burundi,
all of them from Tanzania. 520 returnees entered through Muyinga (in 1
convoy), 2,527 through Ruyigi (in 4 convoys), and 1,360 through Makamba
(in 5 convoys). Among the returnees who entered through Makamba, 136
returnees are former 1993 refugees who arrived on five convoys from the
old settlements of Mishamo, Katumba and Ulyankulu.
The number of the repatriates in June 08 was the highest in a single month
since the operation began in 2002.
The reasons of this massive repatriation are:
(a) the intense mobilization in the repatriation in camps,
(b) the end of the school year,
(c) the end of the harvest for the most the refugees,
(d) the progress made in the peace process.
Since the inception of the repatriation programme, 21% (or 88,902 people)
of the returnees went to the Muyinga province, 19% to the Ruyigi province,
and 18% to the Makamba province. A recent study by FAO, WFP and the
Ministry of Agriculture showed that Ruyigi and parts of Makamba were the
most susceptible to food insecurity in the coming month.
Update on food aid distribution
WFP distributed 356 MT of food aid to 27,034 beneficiaries through its
various programmes. Over the reporting period, WFP finalized the data
collection of study on the prices rise impact on the households in urban
areas. This study concerned a sample of 400 households located in 40
districts of the urban areas of Bujumbura Mairie, Gitega and Ngozi. The
data analysis is in progress. The results of this study will allow the WFP
to plan better his interventions in favours of vulnerable living in the
urban areas.
