Source: UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs Headlines - With support from UNICEF, GOAL distributed 49,680 bars of soap benefiting 4,416 people in Fata Barno (North Darfur). - The water supply in Hamidya IDP Camp (West Darfur) has been improved with its connection to the main Zalingei Urban water corporation pipeline. Needs and response by sector Education North Darfur - With UNICEF support, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) has rehabilitated five Child Friendly Spaces and one Youth Centre in Zam Zam IDP Camp. In Shangil Tobayi IDP Camp, the State Ministry of Education (SMoE) and UNICEF have constructed 53 new classrooms in schools benefiting over 3,000 children, half of which are girls. South Darfur - In a partnership between UNICEF and the SMoE, the rehabilitation of Abu Seneidirra nomadic school was completed. - In Yara village, the UNICEF-supported Child Friendly Community Initiative undertook training in sports activities for 30 young people with music training in Kilmo Kass and drama training is been undertaken in Dimo village. Food Security and Livelihoods West Darfur - Save the Children-USA delivered food aid to 27,340 persons Ardamata and 5,896 refugees in Um Shalaya. An ongoing distribution will benefit 73,547 IDPs in Mornei; 9,212 in Krinding 2, and 9,403 in Dorti. Health and Nutrition North Darfur - Polio immunization efforts have continued in North Darfur, led by the State Ministry of Health (SMoH) with support from UNICEF, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the NGOs Malteser, GOAL, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and Relief International. In the last campaign 367,731 children were vaccinated. - WHO, UNICEF and health partners in North Darfur are working on ways to cover the gap in the recent polio national immunization campaign. Preliminary results in the recent immunization showed 73% of the targeted population were immunized in North Darfur. Around 34,515 children under five from the areas of Gebal Si, Disa, Muzbat, and Tina were not covered in the December round of immunization due to insecurity. - UNICEF supported the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) mission in Haskanita with the provision of health kits, oral rehydration salts, anti-malarial drugs and mosquito nets benefiting 10,000 IDPs in Um Darrab, Judat, Arfaneto and Haskanita areas. - The rehabilitation of Um Hegleig health facility in Um Kaddada locality was facilitated by WHO with the mobilization of the resources required for the renovation. This project is part of WHO's continued support to the local ministry of health and families of the Um Heglieg village to ensure provision of quality primary health care services. South Darfur - UNICEF has provided 40 boxes of nutritional paste, 660 mosquito nets, weighing scales and height boards to Action Against Hunger (ACF) in support of the NGO's nutrition programmes, while the SMoH has been provided with soap and scales for use in the Nyala teaching hospital. - With the coordinated interventions led by WHO in Kass IDP Camp, the number of acute jaundice syndrome (AJS) cases in the camp has now decreased. Interventions with health partners included health education sessions, hygiene promotion activities, as well as improved water and sanitation measures. West Darfur - UNICEF has provided 14 primary health centre kits to the NGO COSV to support medical services in the Kulbus area. - WHO in collaboration with the State Ministry of Health (SMoH) conducted a mission to Abuzar IDP Camp to assess the health situation in the camp after a recent fire in which 286 households were affected. Reports indicate that there were two fatalities and four people were admitted in El Geneina teaching hospital with severe burns. The health and water situation in the camp were assessed by WHO and the SMoH who are now working on health interventions for the affected individuals and families. Non-Food Items (NFIs) North Darfur - With support from UNICEF, GOAL distributed 49,680 bars of soap benefiting 4,416 people in Fata Barno. Meanwhile, in Zam Zam IDP Camp the State Water Corporation (SWC) and UNICEF distributed 124,920 bars of soap to benefit 49,968 IDPs. - Oxfam distributed soap to 7,000 households in As Salaam IDP Camp and 14,000 households in Abu Shouk IDP Camp where each household received 2.5 bars of soap. This follows a recent Oxfam distribution of soap to 7,300 households in Shangil Tobayi. - In Shangil Tobayi, Oxfam distributed NFIs (including water jerry cans, blankets, plastic sheeting and floor mats) to 55 newly arrived households, who arrived in the camp last month. Protection and Human Rights Under the theme 'Community Participation to End Violence Against Women', UNFPA South Darfur and North Darfur supported the following activities: - Established 44 community committees to track, prevent and respond to gender based violence (GBV) at camp level; - Mobilised of 13 International NGOs, 12 National NGOs, seven Women's Groups, and four media sectors in conducting a variety of activities including trainings on GBV and Human rights, groups discussions, marches and drama performances; - Supported the Labadou development committee in Labadou town to observe the 16 days of activism, through activities attended by more than 9,000 women and men; - In North Darfur UNFPA GBV unit ? in collaboration with the Wali ? organized an advocacy seminar with papers on challenging obstacles to end violence against women. In addition to this messages for radio and TV programs were developed and produced on the different aspects of GBV. North Darfur - On 07 January the UNDP Rule of Law Programme in Darfur ? in collaboration with El Fasher University ? organised a discussion session on 'Tribalism in Darfur' at the UNDP Legal Information Centre ? El Fasher University. The objective of the session was to provide a platform to discuss social/ethnic diversity and its impact on the peace process. There were 30 participants including community leaders, university lecturers, State Legislative Council members and IDP leaders. The session was facilitated by Dr. Esam Waddai, Professor of Anthropology at El Fasher University. Water and Sanitation North Darfur - UNICEF supported the State Water Corporation (SWC) and residents to repair: - Five hand pumps in Abu Shouk IDP Camp; - 11 hand pumps in Kassab IDP Camp; - Five hand pumps in Zam Zam IDP Camp. - Oxfam completed an extension of the water system to reach additional households in As Salaam IDP Camp. - Eight new garbage pits were completed by Oxfam in Kalma IDP Camp, sector 4. The pits have been built to a new design aiming to encourage greater community use and reduce environmental impact on the camp. Also, Oxfam's team in Kalma organised and conducted new clean up campaigns to reduce garbage in the camp and raise awareness of health issues. South Darfur - The International Development Relief Board Sudan (IDRB) and WES have completed the drilling four bore holes and the installation of four hand pumps, two in Al Salam and two in Majook for IDPs moving out of Kalima IDP Camp. West Darfur - The SWC and UNICEF have drilled three new boreholes in Krenek. Also, the water supply in Hamidya IDP Camp has been improved with its connection to the main Zalingei Urban water corporation pipeline. - SC-US repaired two hand pumps in Habila last week.
