Source: UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs The following information is based on reports from the UN Country Team and humanitarian partners in Tbilisi andNorth Ossetia, as well as information received from countries involved in the humanitarian response. 1.0 General Humanitarian Overview 1.1 There are approximately 4,200 IDPs currently residing in Gori, including approximately 1,200 in a tented camp,1,000 in host families and 2,000 in collective centers. The situation in the camp has stabilized with additionalfacilities meeting the needs of the IDPs. 1.2 Villages in the 'security zone' south of South Ossetia remain inaccessible for the majority of humanitarian organizations. There are concerns that the absence of international organizations and/or national authorities does not provide an enabling environment for return. Farming is the primary livelihood in these villages, but many farmers risk losing their crops due to their inability or reluctance to return and fear of UXOs. 1.3 The Government of Georgia (GoG) is working in collaboration with humanitarian actors to ensure essential services and support for IDPs in Gori and Tbilisi and to identify longer term solutions before the winter. 1.4 According to the most recent report from the Russian Federation's Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM), 5726.48 MT of relief items have been delivered to Tskhinvali in South Ossetia, including 2042.59 MTs of food, potable water, 127.08 MTs of medicines, 2135.08 MTs of construction material, 115 MTs of disinfection and washing supplies, 850 beds, 260 large tents, 45 generators, 21 water purification units, one mobile gas station and 160 gas cylinders, and 667 MTs of other humanitarian goods. 1.5 On 1 September, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) distributed hygiene items, kitchen sets, bed linen and other household items in Dmenis village in South Ossetia, where over 700 people reside. On 31 August, similar assistance was distributed to almost 800 residents of Khetagurovo village. ICRC is currently the only international humanitarian agency operating in South Ossetia. 2.0 Coordination and Humanitarian Response in Georgia ? Sectoral Updates 2.1 FOOD Lead Agency: WFP Participants: ACF/ACH, CARE, SCF, WVI, MercyCorps, NRC, Premiere Urgence, Caritas, CHF Humanitarian Response & Achievements - As of today, WFP's food assistance has reached 138,000 IDPs and local populations in conflict-affected areas. - WFP is carrying out its food distributions in cooperation with World Vision International, CARE and Save the Children and in close coordination with municipalities and the Ministry of Refugees and Accommodation. - WFP's sub-office in Poti has initiated food deliveries. Gaps & Planning - Attempts to provide food aid to villages beyond the check-points in the 'security zone' have been unsuccessful so far. 2.2 SHELTER AND NON FOOD ITEMS Lead Agency: UNHCR Participants: CARE, Counterpart, DRC, IRD, NRC, Oxfam GB, SDC, IOM, SCF, WVI, CHF Humanitarian Response & Achievements - The Ministry of Refugee and Accommodation (MRA) has identified a list of 34 buildings, which require immediate rehabilitation measures. The Ministry's intent is to relocate IDPs first to temporary/transitional shelters, which will serve as a winterization measure. A preparedness plan is being drafted and will be shared with the Government, in due time.
