ACTIVITIES AND UPDATES
Humanitarian space and security
The security situation over the reporting period was characterised by lootings
and attacks attributed to Palepihutu-FNL combatants. The areas affected were
mainly the Bujumbura rural, Bubanza and Cibitoke provinces, these events seem
to be linked with stalemate in the peace process. Victims lost money, domestic
animals, household items and food reserves. Fields were also reported to have
been harvested by the people behind these attacks, further increasing the
vulnerability of the victims.
Assistance to Burundians expelled from Tanzania
The Government project for the reintegration of war-affected persons (PARESI)
registered 79 Burundians (41 families) expelled from Tanzania who arrived
through the entry points of Kobero/Muyinga Province 63 persons (47 families),
Gisuru/Ruyigi Province 29 (19 families) and Mabanda/Makamba Province 135 (106
families). Since January 1st, 4,014 expelled persons (1,786 families) have
returned to their home country.
Repatriation of Burundian refugees
Over the reporting period, 4,966 Burundian refugees returned to Burundi, all of
them from Tanzania. 10 returnees entered through Muyinga (in 1 convoy), 3,132
returnees through Ruyigi (in 5 convoys), and 1,317 returnees former 1972
refugees (in 3 convoys) and 497 returnees (in 1 convoy) former 1993 refugees
through Makamba.
Update on food aid distribution
WFP distributed 327 MT of food aid to 22,625 beneficiaries through its various
programmes. For the second semester of 2008, WFP plans to distribute about
35,000 MT to a monthly average of 717,000 beneficiaries. This plan will be
adjusted based on the results of the food crop supply and harvest assessments
and as situations requiring a change in the volume of food aid arise.
WFP is carrying out an assessment of the impact of rising food prices in urban
areas. The monitoring of the prices of selected food commodities in Bujumbura
has showed that prices have risen on average by 161% between April 2007 and
April 2008. The chart shows the change of price in some staple food commodities
