Source: UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs Population movements and returns West Darfur - UNHCR Zalingei is currently preparing a data base to be used for consolidating information on new arrivals and camp populations. - On 8 February, UNHCR Mornei registered 61 families (201 individuals) as new arrivals from Chad. Nineteen of these families were reunited with relatives who were already in Um Shalaya camp. - UNHCR Mukjar prepared and provided to the Ministry of Health (MoH) a list of newly born children in the Mukjar refugee camp to facilitate the issuance of birth certificates. - On 25 February, UNHCR Sub Office (SO) El Geneina organized a working session aimed at mainstreaming psychosocial response across the various tiers of response to Sexual and Gender based Violence (SGBV). - UNHCR Zalingei contributed 20 footballs to five schools run by the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) in the Jebel Marra district. - Four IDP households inside Habila were given Non-Food Item (NFI) assistance by UNHCR following a fire incident. - Due to a fire incident next to the UNHCR compound in Mukjar NFIs, including plastic sheets, blankets and kitchen sets, were provided to eight families. - UNHCR Mukjar funded the travel of two teachers from Mukjar to attend the advanced UNDP/ACHR Rule of Law Training of Trainers course held in Khartoum from 20-24 February 2008. - Through the support of the UNHCR Gender Officer, an inter agency team was trained on Age, Gender and Diversity Mainstreaming (AGDM) processes. Protection Staff were also trained on interviewing and SGBV case management. - UNHCR Zalingei assisted Mercy Corp (MC) with an NFI distribution in Hassa Hissa camp for 390 new arrived households (HH) from Warraga, Golo and Teriga. - In Um Shalaya refugee camp, UNHCR distributed food on 10-12 February for 6090 individual refugees, with no incidents reported. - In Um Shalaya refugee camp on 7 and 9 February, UNHCR, through the Medair hygiene promotion team, distributed sanitary materials to 1500 women. - On 5 February, UNHCR issued 3102 pieces of sanitary material to Catholic Relief Services (CRS) for distribution in the El Geneina IDP camps. - On 19 February, UNHCR issued 4568 sanitary wear material pieces to Comite d'Aide Medicale (CAM) for distribution through their medical clinics in El Geneina and to the corridor north of El Geneina (when it opens up following the cessation of hostilities). - UNHCR in Zalingei contributed 390 plastic sheeting, 750 blankets and 390 kitchen sets for the new arrivals at Hassa Hissa camp. On 7 February, these were distributed by MC and Norwegian Church Aid (NCA). - Phase four of the UNHCR Habila shelter project is nearly completed, with only one house remaining to be constructed by the youth volunteers and three more houses to receive fencing. Throughout 2007-08, through Help Age International (HAI), UNHCR has supervised the construction of over 90 houses. - UNHCR in Mukjar has provided shelter materials for 14 new refugees' families have been provided. -- UNHCR Mukjar sent 2000 kitchen sets to Triangle in Um Dukhun in preparation for distribution in the near future. - UNHCR Mukjar, in February, distributed baskets of NFIs to refugees who has arrived in Mukjar before July 2007 (92 families) and also to new arrivals (14 families). Needs and response by sector Food Security and Livelihoods North Darfur - 6,308 new arrivals in Kabkabiya received emergency food assistance from WFP, pending verification. - Joint rapid food security assessments were carried out by WFP and German Agro Action in the following North Darfur locations: Hamrats and Damrats. Other assessments are planned in Abdel Shakour, El Dor and Um Shiddig. South Darfur - 1,958 newly displaced people were registered by WFP in the Ed Daein area, while about 850 new arrivals were registered in Kass. - Two convoys of returnees departed South Darfur for Northern Bahr Al Ghazal in southern Sudan. A total of 812 returnees received a 15-day transit food ration from WFP. West Darfur - WFP and partners distributed food rations to 8,397 people in El Geneina, Armankul and Um Shalaya refugee camp in the preceding week. - Save the Children USA has delivered 93.9 MT of food to 6,002 beneficiaries in Hujaj, Jamaa and Abu Zar in West Darfur between 2 and 5 March. Health and Nutrition - UNFPA is supporting a training (TOT) on clinical management of rape guidelines with the Federal Ministry of Health at Khartoum on 16 through 18 of March for medical cadre from states of Khartoum ? Kassala and S. Kordofan. Same training will be replicated in the three states of Darfur immediately after the one of Khartoum is over. Training will be supervised by a UNFPA international consultant. Clinical management of rape guidelines are the WHO adopted guidelines to the context of Sudan and translated into Arabic by Ministry of Health and with support of UNFPA. North Darfur - Following reports to WHO of suspected cases of diphtheria in Dar Semiat area (40km north of El Fasher), the 2nd workshop on diphtheria cases definition and management was conducted for 20 medical assistants to support the teams in case of need for more mobile clinics. 3 clinics located in selected village centres with capacity of 2 MAs and 2 vaccinators each, are doing consultations and routine EPI activities. - Two supervisory missions were conducted to the area by the State Ministry of Health surveillance team and EPI to assess the situation and to provide the mobile clinics with needed medications and supplies. WHO with UNICEF are closely following the situation to supporting SMOH and the mobile clinics operating in villages. - A one-day workshop/working session for environmental health Technical Officers was held on 03rd March 2008 in WHO North Darfur sub-office. The workshop is aimed at sharing information among Darfur environmental health pillar teams and harmonize the activities among Darfur states. - In response to an increasing density of flies in Zamzam camp, WHO supported PLAN Sudan in implementing a spraying campaign and dusting of latrines in the camp. - Meanwhile, to address the issue of water quality monitoring - WHO supported the State Ministry of Health in its water quality monitoring activities for Abu shook and El-Salam camps covering 6 water tanks and 2 tap stands. In line with environmental health activities, WHO led the meeting with the local health ministry and Save the Children-US and discussed with them the solid waste management policies of SMoH and the existing mechanisms. WHO provided assorted waste containers and other cleaning tools to Geneina Hospital. South Darfur - WHO Communicable Diseases and Control and the State Ministry of Health (SMoH) held its weekly task force meeting to review the meningitis situation and expressed satisfaction on state preparedness in event of meningitis outbreak. WHO and Epidemiology Department (SMoH) conducted the first session of meningitis training workshops including the case management and reporting for the medical doctors working mainly in Nyala and its surrounding camps. The same training will be conducted for the rest of the medical cadres working in IDP camps in Nyala. Enhanced surveillance through the early warning, alert, and response system for reporting of suspected meningitis cases and pre positioned medical drugs and supplies in localities. West Darfur - The World Health Organization (WHO) distributed soft copies in Arabic and English guidelines on Clinical Management of Rape to all health partners in West Darfur dealing with gender-based violence cases in their primary health clinics. The WHO also facilitated the meeting with the gender-based violence working group to discuss achievements and constraints in 2007 and drawn out a plan for 2008. - WHO is working closely with health partners in West Darfur to finalize the baseline information of the health facility infrastructure and human resources. Response has been appreciated by health partners as this will eventually help identify gaps and also assist in response and covering the gaps. - WHO continues to monitor and provide technical support to targeted hospitals in 6 state hospitals. Free access of IDPs to health services has been closely monitored by WHO. El Geneina Hospital has been provided with new safety boxes for sharp collection and 1000 examination gloves. A total of 3,027 patients visited Save the Children's 6 clinics in West Darfur for health related illnesses and injuries. 1552 were children under 5. 199 patients visited Mornei clinic, 601 patients visited the clinic in Habila, 643 patients visited the Krenik clinic, 299 patients visited the Gimeiza Babiker clinic, 454 patients visited the Hagar Bagar clinic and 831 patients visited the Ruhal Bokhat clinic. NFIs & Emergency Shelter West Darfur - The Embassy of Japan in Khartoum has concluded a grant contract with Human Security Initiative Organization, a local NGO, to enable them to distribute blankets and school supplies at the Kalma Camp in Southern Darfur State through Grant Assistance for Grassroots and Human Security Projects (GGHSP). Protection and Human Rights West Darfur - On March 10th, a celebration for International Women's Day was held in one of Save the Children USA's Women Centres in Riyadh camp. Through keynote addresses, poetry, and dramatic events, women shared their experiences of women's empowerment and capacity building. UN agencies and NGOs attended.
