Key overall developments
- With the current change in security phase, humanitarian actors in Darfur
have confirmed that they will continue their humanitarian life-saving
activities despite the constraints of security phase four.
Needs and response by sector
Education
West Darfur
- With UNICEF support Islamic Relief has completed the rehabilitation of
24 temporary classrooms in Krinding IDP Camp benefiting 1,440 children
Health and Nutrition
North Darfur
- UNICEF released four (4) months of supplies of F100 (160 cartons), F75
(28 cartons) and 656 cartons of nutritional paste to ACF to be distributed
in Abu Shouk and As Salaam IDP Camps.
South Darfur
- With UNICEF support 19,771 families in Al Salam IDP Camp ? of which
4,000 are new ? received soap for personal hygiene. Meanwhile in Mossei
IDP Camp 890 persons were reached with hygiene messages through two (2)
group discussions, one (1) hygiene session, 12 water dialog sessions and
two (2) household visits. While in Otash IDP Camp approximately 3,070 IDPS
benefited from 800 household visits, six (6) water dialog sessions and
four (4) group discussions.
- UNICEF released 600 cartons of Nutritional paste, 100 cartons of F100
and 30 cartons of F75 to Action Contre la Faim (ACF) to cover the
nutrition needs of children in the feeding centers in Kalma IDP Camp, Al
Salam IDP Cam and Nyala town.
Non-Food Items (NFIs)
NFI common pipeline operations normalized in each of the three Darfur
states this week with five needs based targeted distributions taking
place.
North Darfur
- The NFI Common Pipeline supported 503 households of IDPs not served
before who arrived at Shangil Tobayi IDP Camp between January and May of
2008. Items distributed were plastic sheeting and jerry cans.
Distributions were carried out by OXFAM.
South Darfur
- This week, Rehaid El-Fursan Rural Development distributed 2,000 Common
Pipeline NFIs to IDPs requiring replenishment in Otash IDP Camp.
- Humedica distributed Common Pipeline NFIs to 1,800 newly displaced
households in Al Salam IDP Camp. Distributed items included plastic
sheeting, sleeping mats, jerry cans, women's clothing and blankets.
West Darfur
- The majority of distributions supported IDPs requiring replenishment in
West Darfur this week. Of the 995 households served, Catholic Relief
Services (CRS) distributed NFI Common Pipeline items to 750 households in
Medinat Huzaz IDP Camp and the Sudanese Red Crescent Society (SRCS)
distributed to 245 households in Dorti IDP Camp.
Protection and Human Rights
North Darfur
- With the current change in security phase, UNICEF partners in child
protection activities have confirmed that their activities will be
continuing. Enfant de Monde (EMDH) reported that about 4,200 children are
benefiting from the UNICEF Supported psychosocial support programme in 15
child friendly spaces (CFS) in Abu Shouk IDP Camp. Save the Children
Sweden (SCS) reported that 15,000 children and youth are receiving
psychosocial activities in 60 CFS
? supported by UNICEF ? in As Salaam IDP Camp, Tawilla, Kutum, Kassab and
Fatabarno. The International Rescue Committee (IRC) reported that an
estimated 3,500 children and youth are having access to the child and
youth centers in the three (3) IDP camps in El Fasher.
- UNICEF-Child Protection is supporting 'on job training' for 25 police
officers and three (3) social workers designated to work in the Family and
Child Protection Unit in North Darfur. The training is taking place in the
Family and Child Protection Unit (FCPU) in Khartoum from 24 to 28th July.
South Darfur
- The Child Friendly Community Initiative (CFCI) ? with UNICEF support ?
have constructed two (2) new child friendly spaces (CFS's) in
Gahdal-Haboum in Nyala locality and in Amasho community in Al Salam
locality. A child protection network has been established and four (4)
animators were been trained on the Convention on the Rights of the Child
(CRC) and psycho-social support. Activities are due to start after the
delivery of supplies including recreational kits to the CFS's.
- UNICEF supported five days of Training of Trainers (ToT) organized by
the Child Development Foundation (CDF) for 26 social workers (15 women and
11 men), including the mobile team and office staff. The workshop covered
the Convention on the Rights of the Child and African charter; child
protection related issues; physical, emotional and sexual abuse; children
and displacement; and a brief on Security Council Resolution 1612
(resolution on the use of child soldiers) including an overview of the
monitoring and reporting mechanism.
- The CFCI ? with UNICEF support ? conducted eight (8) workshops on mine
risk education in Rehaid Albirdy and Kass localities. Attendees were
teachers, community leaders, women's and youth groups.
Water and Sanitation
West Darfur
- The UNICEF water, environment and sanitation (WES) programme continued
the routine operation maintenance and chlorination of 17 water schemes in
Mornei, Geneina, Zalingei, Um Shalaya, Trige and Um Kheir reaching an
estimated 102,000 beneficiaries.
- UNICEF/WES reached 433 households with hygiene messages on prevention of
diseases associated with the rainy season. The visits were carried out by
WES trained volunteers working under the camp IDP WES units in the three
camps of west Darfur. Four (4) Clean up campaigns were also organized by
the WES units in Dorti and Ardamata.
