BURUNDI: Suspected coup plotters to be charged, attorney-general says
Burundi's attorney-general, Jean Bosco Ndikumana, said on Tuesday that
six politicians and an army officer arrested for allegedly plotting a
coup would be charged in court within two days.
Two of the suspects appeared before Ndikumana on what he described as a
routine procedure. "They were here because their legal stay in custody
had expired," he said. Under Burundian law, detainees can only remain in
custody for a maximum of seven days, after which they must appear in
court.
The seven detainees include former Vice-President Alphonse Marie Kadege.

UGANDA: Talks on hold as rebels demand cessation of hostilities
Peace talks aimed at ending northern Uganda's 20-year civil war hit a
snag on Thursday after the rebel Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) demanded a
truce before resuming discussions, officials said.
"We are waiting for the mediators to tell us the way forward, but our
delegation will remain in Juba to see that the process is taken to its
logical conclusion," Robert Kabushenga, the Kampala-based government
spokesman said.
The LRA stormed out of the talks on Wednesday, demanding that the
government declare a unilateral ceasefire before the talks could resume.
"There is no formal ceasefire with the LRA, therefore we have a duty to
defend our people against the marauding rebel fighters who stage raids
for food," Army spokesman Lt Chris Magezi said.

TANZANIA: Cholera breaks out in Zanzibar, 106 in hospital
At least 106 people, most of them children, have been hospitalised in
the last one week following a cholera outbreak in Tanzania's
semiautonomous island of Zanzibar, an official from the Ministry of
Health said on Wednesday.
"Already one person has died," Dr Omar Suleiman, the director of
information policy in the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, said.
Cholera and diarrhoea outbreaks started in March, with a resurgence in
late May and June, before erupting again in July in most areas of the
Zanzibar Municipality and Pemba Island.

KENYA: Flash flood hits drought-stricken district
Four people were confirmed dead on Thursday after flash floods hit
Kenya's drought-stricken northern Marsabit district, the Kenya Red Cross
Society (KRCS) said.
"Our assessment team has arrived in the area with some food and non-food
items and has confirmed four dead so far," Farid Abdikadir, KRCS head of
disaster response said. "We will have a better picture of the situation
later today when the team returns from the field."
