DRC: Suspected haemorrhagic fever claims 100 in Kasai
An epidemic suspected to be haemorrhagic fever has broken out in the
Mweka area, about 100km north-west of Kananga, the administrative centre
of Kasai Occidental province in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with
more than 100 deaths, according to health authorities.
The provincial doctor, Jean-Constatin Kanow, said 217 people had
contracted the disease, of whom 103 had died, three of them children,
since 8 June.
According to Kanow, the epidemic affected four villages: Kampungu,
Makonono, Kaluamba and Mombo, but it had not been firmly identified yet
and it was still progressing.

BURUNDI: Peace process must be concluded by year-end - mediator
The mediator in the Burundian peace process, South Africa's security
minister Charles Nqakula, has said a lasting peace accord between the
government of Burundi and the rebel group that remains outside the peace
process must be concluded by year-end.
"We got instructions from the African Union to complete the mission by
the end of this year," Nqakula told IRIN on 29 August after meeting
Burundi's President Pierre Nkurunziza.
The Forces nationales de liberation, led by Agathon Rwasa, is the only
active rebel movement in the country, despite signing a ceasefire
agreement with the government in September 2006.

DRC: First displaced return home to Masisi
Thousands of villagers who had fled the first clashes between the army
and militias close to renegade general Laurent Nkunda in the Masisi
hills, North Kivu province, in the eastern part of the Democratic
Republic of Congo, are starting to return home, according to UN sources.
"We have heard that the displaced are starting to return to their
homes," said Christophe Illemassene of the UN Office for the
Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
It is estimated that about a third of the population has been displaced.
Since Masisi has about 26,000 people, that would mean about 8,500
displaced people returning home. According to Illemassene, however, it
is impossible to estimate accurately the numbers involved because the
area remains inaccessible.
