The fighting, which pits members of the Guji community against their Borena neighbours, has claimed up to 150 lives and forced tens of thousands of people to flee their villages around the towns of Shakiso, Arero and Yabello, according to local officials and aid workers. [Full story at: http://www.irinnews.org/report.asp?ReportID=54362] SOMALIA: Fact-finding mission meets UIC officials A joint fact-finding mission, comprising representatives of the European Union, African Union, Intergovernmental Authority on Development and the Arab League, on Thursday met leaders of the Union of the Islamic Courts (UIC), to discuss the situation in Somalia. The 24-member team is in Somalia to also assess the situation in the capital, Mogadishu, ahead of a proposed deployment of regional peacekeeping troops. [Full story at: http://www.irinnews.org/report.asp?ReportID=54441] SOMALIA: Islamic courts issue Mogadishu travel guidelines The Union of Islamic Courts (UIC), which currently controls the Somali capital of Mogadishu, has announced new guidelines on travel to the city, saying it wants to boost traveler safety. "The guidelines are to make sure that we provide the necessary protection to any visitor," Shaykh Abdulkadir Ali, the vice-chairman of the UIC executive council, said on Sunday. "We want to make sure that what happened with the Swedish journalist does not happen again." [Full story at: http://www.irinnews.org/report.asp?ReportID=54363] SOMALIA-SUDAN: Attacks on aid vehicles in Somalia, Sudan Armed militias attacked a convoy transporting food aid to southern Somalia on Wednesday, sparking a clash with men guarding the trucks in which several people reportedly died, sources said. "There was a shooting involving a transporter contracted to the WFP [United Nations World Food Programme] carrying WFP food. We are investigating to determine what exactly happened," Peter Smerdon, a spokesman for the agency in Nairobi, told IRIN. [Full story at: http://www.irinnews.org/report.asp?ReportID=54412] SUDAN: Violence worsens in Darfur IDP camp Violent attacks have increased in the largest camp for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the troubled western Sudanese Darfur region, according to observers. In Nyala, the capital of South Darfur, an analyst said the security situation in nearby Kalma camp had worsened since the signing of the Darfur peace deal on 5 May, adding that the worst attacks were taking place at night.
