ETHIOPIA: World Bank pledges continued support
The World Bank will continue supporting Ethiopia's development efforts,
President Paul Wolfowitz said on Wednesday, expressing confidence that
the country was recovering from the political upheaval that caused major
donors to suspend direct budgetary support last year.
"I think there is more reason to feel confident that people are learning
the right lessons from the experiences of last year," Wolfowitz told
reporters at the end of a two-day visit to the country.

ETHIOPIA: Fourteen dead as diarrhoea hits Oromiya region
An outbreak of acute diarrhoea has claimed the lives of 14 people in the
Oromiya region of southern Ethiopia, where more than 530 cases of the
disease have been reported in the past two weeks, a United Nations
agency said.
Cases had been reported in the East Shoa zone of the region, with the
worst-hit areas being Shashemene, Siraro and Arsi Negele, the UN Office
for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), said in a bulletin
issued on Monday.

ETHIOPIA: High population growth could slow development - gov't
Ethiopia's high population growth is a major challenge to the country's
development and could slow down efforts to alleviate poverty, the
finance ministry said in a report.
Ethiopia's population stands at 75 million, with 2.5 million babies born
every year, according to the study on the impact of the high population
growth on economic development, released on Monday.

SOMALIA: Egeland remains cautiously optimistic on Somalia
Top United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator Jan Egeland remained
cautiously optimistic regarding the humanitarian situation in war-torn
Somalia after a UN team visited the Islamic Courts Militia in the
capital on Sunday.
"We agreed to have a systematic dialogue with the Courts to get access
to the civilian population in Mogadishu," said Egeland, noting that it
is the only capital on earth with no presence of international
organisations.

Calm returned to Mogadishu, the Somali capital, on Tuesday after two
days of fighting between the Union of Islamic Courts (UIC) and militia

forces handing over their weapons to the courts," said Hassan Ade of
Mogadishu-based HornAfrik Radio.

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan has called for the
strengthening of Somalia's transitional government to save the shaky
peace process in the Horn of Africa country.
In his report to the UN Security Council on Somalia on Friday, Annan
also urged the international community to facilitate reconciliation
between the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) and other political
groups in the country.

SUDAN: Factional fighting displaces thousands more in Darfur
Clashes between rival factions of a rebel group in Sudan's western
region of Darfur have displaced 8,000 civilians in the past 10 days,
United Nations emergency coordinator Jan Egeland said on Tuesday,
reiterating his call for the deployment of a UN peacekeeping force in
the war-ravaged area.
Rivalries between the two factions of the Sudan Liberation Army (SLA)
have been exacerbated by differences over a peace deal signed by one of
the groups with the government in May.

SUDAN: 'Neglected diseases' re-emerge in the south
As southern Sudan emerges from decades of devastating civil war that has
killed an estimated 2 million people, diseases believed to have been
under control are resurfacing, the World Health Organization (WHO) has
warned.
"South Sudan has pretty much all the neglected diseases and has them in
large quantities," said Mickey Richer, WHO communicable disease officer
in southern Sudan.
