Abdurahman Abdulahi, senior research officer at DLCO-EA, told IRIN there was a potential threat to the Somali region, which shares a border with Somalia. The regional state had faced a similar desert locust outbreak in Denbel, Aisha and Afdem woredas in Shinnile zone in April 2007. [Full story at: http://www.irinnews.org/Report.aspx?ReportId=72025] SOMALIA: Practising medicine in the middle of violence, displacement and deprivation In the midst of Somalia's chaos and violence, mostly in and around the capital, Mogadishu, one woman has vowed to make a positive contribution. Hawa Abdi is a gynaecologist with a practice in a 26-hectare compound that has become a camp for thousands of displaced Mogadishu residents fleeing the fighting between Ethiopian-backed government forces and insurgents. Abdi opened her practice - 20km south of Mogadishu - in the 1980s with in-patient and out-patient facilities. The civil war began in the 1990s and with it the crumbling of her successful practice. [Full story at: http://www.irinnews.org/Report.aspx?ReportId=72036] SUDAN-UGANDA: Refugee repatriation to gather pace Voluntary repatriation of Southern Sudanese refugees from Uganda is set to increase with the introduction of a third corridor of return to Eastern Equatoria state in August, the United Nations Refugee Agency, UNHCR, said on Wednesday. Officials from Uganda, South Sudan and the UNHCR met in Kampala and agreed that the pace of return should be expedited, despite the logistical challenges.
