SOMALIA: UN calls for immediate re-engagement
The United Nations wants the international community to re-engage in
Somalia to take advantage of a "window of opportunity", the UN Resident
and Humanitarian Coordinator for Somalia, Eric Laroche, said.
"The people are war-weary after more than 15 years of conflict,
instability and insecurity," said Laroche on Wednesday. "We need to
resume as soon as possible high-impact projects in the capital that
support stabilisation and make a visible difference in peoples' lives."

SOMALIA: Food aid for displaced near Kenyan border
Displaced Somalis living near the Kenyan border have received some food
assistance, despite the recent closure of the frontier, the United
Nations World Food Programme (WFP) said.
"Some WFP-contracted trucks loaded with food were allowed to cross into
Somalia from Liboi, but others were stopped at the border. These people
have been trapped near Dhobley," the WFP-Somalia Deputy Country Director
Leo van der Velden said.

KENYA-SOMALIA: Border closure keeps children out of school
At least 2,000 Somali children who attend schools in northeastern Kenya
have failed to resume classes a week after school re-opened, due to the
closure of the border, officials said.
Kenyan officials confirmed that the children, who attend schools in the
districts of Mandera, Ijara, Wajir and Garissa, have not been allowed in
the country since fighting broke out in Somalia in December.

SUDAN: Insecurity in Darfur threatens aid delivery - UN agencies
Ongoing insecurity in Sudan's Darfur region means humanitarian
organisations operating there cannot ensure the survival of thousands of
internally displaced persons, United Nations humanitarian agencies said.
"In the face of growing insecurity and danger to communities and aid
workers, the UN and its humanitarian partners have effectively been
holding the line for the survival and protection of millions. That line
cannot be held much longer," the team said on Wednesday.
