"The raid was political and a warning to other civil society organisations to toe the government line," said Tony Burns, director of operations for SAACID-Australia, a sister organisation of SAACID-Somalia, the NGO that was raided on 18 June. Full report http://www.irinnews.org/Report.aspx?ReportId=72842 SOMALIA: Deteriorating food security in south The food security and nutrition situation in southern Somalia's Lower and Middle Shabelle regions is deteriorating, putting the mainly riverine and agro-pastoralist households there at increased risk of humanitarian crisis, an early warning agency has said. The deterioration is due to the cumulative effects of conflict, insecurity and civilian displacement within the Shabelle region, "which [have] led to stress on host communities with IDP [internally displaced persons] influx and sharp inflationary price increases over the last three months", the UN Food and Agriculture Organization's Food Security Analysis Unit (FSAU), said in a statement. Full report http://www.irinnews.org/Report.aspx?ReportId=72789 SOMALIA: Government moves to boost reconciliation efforts The Somali government is to pardon suspected insurgents and release those detained in connection with recent fighting in a move to encourage national reconciliation, a senior official said. "The amnesty is intended to allow those who fought the government directly or indirectly to come out and participate in the reconciliation process," Justice Minister Hassan Dhimbil Warsame told IRIN on 19 June. Full report http://www.irinnews.org/Report.aspx?ReportId=72812 SUDAN: Continuing violence in West Darfur claims NGO employee The killing of an employee of the NGO Action by Churches Together-Caritas (ACT-Caritas) in West Darfur has brought to five the number of people recently killed in Zalingei area, amid continuing violence that is hampering aid work across the western Sudanese region. "This killing follows a spate of attacks in the camps around Zalingei," the charity said in a statement on 19 June. "Since the beginning of June, five camp residents have been shot and killed, huts have been set on fire, people have been beaten, and women assaulted almost daily. Full report http://www.irinnews.org/Report.aspx?ReportId=72837 SUDAN: Oxfam pulls out of Gereida, government accepts hybrid force for Darfur Oxfam has decided to permanently close down its humanitarian operation in the town of Gereida in Sudan's western region of Darfur, citing reluctance by authorities there to improve security and stop attacks on aid workers. Oxfam's announcement on 17 June came as a United Nations Security Council delegation visited the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, where it received the government's reaffirmation of its unconditional agreement to the deployment of a hybrid African Union-United Nations peacekeeping force in Darfur.
