SOMALIA: Soup kitchens for the poorest in Mogadishu
An NGO in Somalia has set up soup kitchens targeting the poorest
families in the capital, Mogadishu, who are unable to access help due to
ongoing violence.
"We are operating 10 kitchens in 10 of the 16 districts of Mogadishu,
providing cooked food to thousands of people who would otherwise go
hungry," Mohamed Abdullahi Mahamud, of Saacid, the NGO running the
kitchens, told IRIN.

SOMALIA: Aid appeal broadened to cope with massive displacement
Massive displacement of civilians in the escalating conflict in Somalia
this year has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in a country already
reeling from years of civil strife and natural disasters, aid agencies
said in their appeal for US$406 million to fund life-saving assistance
and protection for more than 1.5 million people in 2008.
Fighting between forces of the Transitional Federal Government (TFG),
which is backed by Ethiopian troops, and insurgents, intensified in
Mogadishu in early 2007.

SUDAN: Water shortage fears in Darfur camps
Long queues of women and children at water distribution points are a
frequent sight in the Abou Shouk displaced persons camp of North Darfur.
But at Mornei camp in West Darfur, the children play under gushing taps
and water streams across muddy roads.
The danger of this contrast is outlined in a recent report warning that
21 camps, home to 800,000 of the 2,400,000 displaced people in Darfur,
are potentially vulnerable to a severe water shortage in the event of a
drought.
