ETHIOPIA: Government calls for more funds to offset food shortages
Donor pledges to cover food and non-food items were insufficient to
tackle the massive food shortages the country is facing, the government
has said.
"Until now we have got US$160 million in pledges," Deputy Prime Minister
Addisu Legese said. "[But] we need $430 million," the official, who
recently visited some of the most affected areas, added.

SOMALIA: Displaced return as fighting subsides in central town
Life is returning to normal in Guri-Eil in Galgadud region, central
Somalia, as thousands of displaced people make their way back to the
town after fleeing fighting between Ethiopian forces and insurgents.
"The town is calm and we have begun the process of bringing back the
population," Ali Sheikh Mahamud, the Galgadud district commissioner,
told IRIN on 3 July.

SOMALIA: Govt denounces attacks on aid workers as abductions continue
The government and civil society groups condemned the continuing attacks
against aid workers even as another five Somali aid workers were
abducted.
"It seems there is a concerted campaign against aid workers and civil
society. We don't know who is behind it or why," said a civil society
source in Mogadishu, who requested anonymity.

SOMALIA: Thousands displaced following attack on central town
Officials in Guri-Eil town in Galgadud region have appealed for urgent
help for thousands of people displaced after fighting between Ethiopian
troops and insurgents over the weekend.
"Most of the [30,000] residents and thousands of displaced fled the town
after intense fighting between the Ethiopians and the insurgents on
Sunday [29 June]," Osman Isse Nur, the deputy district commissioner,
told IRIN on 30 June.
